wow, I had a look at a demo unit in Oxford St and I thought it had been dropped - it had the same crack at the bottom.

luck i'm not a 'hot swapper' so when I get mine it will stay shut.

But that does suck.

On a related note the HTC Legend has a similar design and the bottom bit become sort or loose and can easily come off in your pocket.

The Desire's back plate feels like you are going to snap it everytime you pull it off though, so I don't know if i prefer that design either.

Sealed unit FTW? LOL

Shame on HTC for making such a top notch smartphone, and then finishing it with such fiddly, weak and not properly fitting covers... both of them

luckily non of the two covers has broken, but I'm afraid some day one of them will break.

How hard can it be to make them out of metal? And just put the antenna on the outside of the phone, covered with a rubber layer that gets two birds in one stone, also providing anti slipping surface for when you lay it down on a non level surface or fabric (ie. trousers, bed, car panel, desks...)

I think some of you may end up with a warranty problem.
For the cover to end up like this, it has to be pinched from both sides, as some of you have said you did.
But the instructions that come with the phone shows two thumbs pushing cover up from back (page 9 of manual).
My advice, do not say this happened when you pinched the cover.

Dear xxxxxxx xxxxxxx,

Thank you for your call earlier reguarding the HTC Desire HD (DHD). I have asked around in upper management about getting the DHD repaired under warrenty and its been declined. However i have logged your disatisfaction over the build quality of the spoken component.

Kind Regards

Sincerely,

Mohammed

Sim Cover Design

+1 Sim, cover bent in half for me also, ok i did not read the manual and slid it off from the side (only because i did not want to damage it in the first place) i have had many HTC's and never had to worry about such things.

Hopefully a metal replacement will be on the market soon

My first post here and afraid to say, Me too......

Just phoned HTC and was told they hadn't heard of it before so had to check.... came back to me and said they coud log it with the manufacturer which could wait 7 weeks for a reply or take it back as it is within 28 days.... took it back where I bought it and they want to send it away, just as ive finally got everything working right :( !!!

Checked the HTC site and they sell the battery cover as an accessory, surely your more likely to remove this cover than the battery one

Very unhappy

Same thing happened to me when I was swapping the supplied 8Gb for my existing 16Gb card.

I see a replacement is now up on the HTC uk website for £15.95, search for item 37H00364-04M

Poor build quality is one thing, but charging £16 for a cheap piece of plastic is a joke in really poor taste. Really disappointed with HTC.

Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Same thing happened to me as well when trying to remove the SIM cover, it now has a very obvious crack in the middle (not broken though), and an even bigger crack near the hole on the bottom side.

Unbelievable that this can happen so easily with a brand new high-end phone. And since it happens to so many people no matter what HTC or anybody says, this is very poor design by HTC.

Definitely something I will remember when choosing my next phone in 2 years.

(btw, the extremely poor sound quality of the speaker is also pissing me off ... weird thing is that I still like the phone though and will keep using it.)

I will try that, thanks for the tip!

By the way, did you request a new SIM cover right away in your 1st message? And did you attach a picture of the cracked cover or did HTC ask for pics?

Same thing happened to me, man this sux, I tried and tried and tried to remove by the guide but it wouldnt come off so I applied pressure on the sides and the damn thing folded in half. I emailed HTC and they want me to send the entire device back to them which will cost more than just buying a new cover, what a jib!
