Wasn't sure whether to put this here as a question or in the accessories area. Thought here was more appropriate.

Seen some replies on here and on the other note threads about magnetic cases causing problems with the digitizer technology in these devices. I was hoping to get more insight into this to see if anyone had noticed any long term damage on their older note devices.

Note: This only seems to affect digitizer tech, so I'm not looking for people to prove that it has no effect on their non note devices.

What I can tell from what I've read, having a magnet near the screen while using the spen can cause accuracy issues, but long term use of a magnet on the screen (to enable the on off function) can cause a dead area on that part of the screen for spen responce and that the damage is permanent.

This has me worried enough to rethink my choice of cases. I dont have any prior history with digitizer techonoly and for the amount im paying for this tablet, I dont want to take any risks.

Can people who have used magnetic on off enabled cases for at least a year on their older note devices set my mind at ease or let me know if this concern is genuine? It seems mad that a feature of the official samsung case could cause damage to the digitizer with prolonged use.

I already had some cases in my Amazon shopping cart when I found out about this issue... I decided not to risk it.

Luckily when I purchased my Note 8.0 it came with the Official Pouch Stand... which works wonderfully for my uses.

If I were you I wouldn't tempt fate. Surely you can find a case without a magnet and then wether it's a myth or not - at least you'll have peace of mind.

As the Digitizer tech works with magnetic resonance, it stands to reason that having a magnet int the same spot, day after day, week after week, month after month is eventually going to screw with the calibration.

Fact causes problems with your digitizer and stylus. Just order it and try for your self after a week or two you'll be posting about how to begin warranty process. Seriously avoid the magnets man. Happened on my note 2 . After I got rid of the case issue solved. Do what you want

I began using tb Poetic Slimline case in my Note 8.0 and it noticeably caused issues with the S-Pen somewhere in the mid-left of the screen. I purchased an STM Cape and won't risk it damaging my device...

Do you mean it was fixed as soon as the case was removed? Or you had to get it repaired after you stopped using the case?

I immediately noticed problems and knew it was the magnet. So I cut out the magnet and it went away. But if you leave it exposed to magnet for to long the damage will be permanent. Mine was only on for 10 minutes top s before I made the connection. Once it was gone it went back to normal no repairs needed. I

Why does Samsung sell case with the awake function? Haven't they researched this? Just wondering...

According to Wacom forums, the magnet can affect performance, but it wont do permanent damage
http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8863

I'm using a Khomo case with the magnet in the hand strap, doesn't seem to have any problems for me
http://www.amazon.com/KHOMO-Purple-...id=1369186743&sr=8-11&keywords=khomo+note+8.0

I also have this keyboard case (the keyboard is attached with 4 magnets)
http://www.amazon.com/KHOMO-Leather...qid=1369186743&sr=8-1&keywords=khomo+note+8.0

No problems with the keyboard attached or not; I even took off the keyboard and put the magnet part on the screen, there was no change in accuracy as far as I can tell <- maybe the magnets in the khomo cases are too weak to affect it? the screen still turns on and off as it should though (and if there is a magnetic sensor in the screen, wouldn't that affect the wacom layer?

For people who don't know how the wacom layer works, here's a quick overview:
http://www.tablet4u.co.uk/techinfo.html

So you'd probably need quite a strong magnet to disrupt the field produced by the screen (especially if it's from the case cover <- it would have to go through the cover, the back cover, the back part of the tablet and thru the wacom layer)

So for people who are worried: Magnets affecting the digitizer layer is probably real, but unless you have an overly strong magnet it wont do much. (kinda like when they tried to erase a harddrive with an electromagnet on mythbuster... they needed some crazy strong electromagnet) take a look at these:

Yes, a magnet behind the Note 8 did disrupt the accuracy of the S Pen while I was sketching using the Sketchbook Ink app. I make my own modified case and so I put a small magnet under the a bookmark to turn on/off the screen when closing or opening the "page" as you can see:

uploadfromtaptalk1369190917261.jpg
uploadfromtaptalk1369190800700.jpg
uploadfromtaptalk1369190876888.jpg

The magnet I use is quite strong, and it even turns off the screen when I take out the Note 8 to use on top of the folio cover. And when I just flip the entire cover around to put my Note 8 on top of the folio's rear side, the magnet now would disrupt the accuracy of the S Pen input on the right side of the screen.

I'm just guessing it would present some long term effect on the Wacom sheet sensor where the magnet is placed. Or maybe not. I have opted to find a weaker magnet instead. I do see using the Note 8 for the next 2 years, if nothing better with a Wacom system comes along. I'm enjoying drawing with this and I'd hate for it to have problems.

I talk more about this custom "notebook cover" (literally a notebook) at the Accessories section of the Note 8 forums under the title "The Hidden Note 8".

Hi,
while I haven't used one before, Note 8 is my first, I have added a magnet to my case for on off.

I used a pair of magnets from an old ipad smart cover. These magnets are set up with a backing plate and polarity such that there is very little magnetism leakage at the back, only to the front.

This means no effect on digitiser when folded around behind.

While I am only a poor engineer, the physics of this situation should be plain. A magnet will effect the digitiser (radio waves) while in use if not shielded as I did and if they are sufficiently strong.

Secondly I cannot think of any mechanism for long term damage other than something (digitiser grid or metal shield) that is a magnetic material that could be perminatly magnetised by the presence of the magnets in the closed position. Of course this is not actually perminant and a quick pass with a de-guasing wand will remove any residual magnetism.

As there is no magnetic storage in these devices it won't erase any data.

just my thoughts

I bought the official Samsung cover today and to my horror there are magnets every where. ?..I can't believe it.

Im cutting them out. I can't believe they would do that. I was for sure they wouldn't do that I thought it was the safest bet. Damn .

It appears the one in the back is shielded because these is no magnetism on the inside of the case

But the re are magnets on the edge of the cover where you pen it. They are not shielded and those are the ones close to stylus and the screen. I'm astounded. Really I am

So the magnets at the edge of the folio would those create problems. They're obviously not shielded like the one on the back. There's actually for magnets on the back and for on the edge.

^ I would be very interested to see the long term effects of using the official case... By no means do I suggest keeping those magnets in, I'm just thrilled I have the Official Stand Pouch instead of the Official Book Cover.

We'll probably have to wait a few weeks /months before uninformed customers start returning their units and complaining online about dead areas. It seems absurd Samsung would create an accessory that could cost them a fortune (both in returns and reputation). Something tells me they must have done extensive research / testing and that the magnets they used are somehow safe. But I wouldn't risk it. I wouldn't want to be the Guinnea Pig to find out. :(

I could believe it. In business, despite our hopes to the contrary, it is all about numbers. If the problem shows up in only a small percentage of units or doesn't generally develop during the warranty period, they would easily develop a "technically questionable" product if that product increases general public acceptance through features and/or quality (e.g. sleep/wake). So while Joe individual might end up getting boned, as long as all the Jones's and Smith's are ok, that's perfectly acceptable business. Know what I mean? So costing a fortune would be questionable. If, for example they suffer a 2 million dollar loss on units going bad due to this problem during a 1 year warranty, but overall they make 4 million dollars selling the case, they are still up 2 million. Businesses do this type of thing all the time.

This is what raised my to ask the question in the first place. Your comment earlier that everyone knows that magnets have a negative effect on tech suprised me considering the official cover used them. I was very keen on getting the cover and using the screen on and off functionality, but while doing my research into it I quickly came across people writing about issues they had on their other note devices.

These are true words... It's a damn shame this is how the world runs... But I guess the lesson is:

There is no longer the option to just accept what you are told or to go with the flow. The responsibility is with each one of us to make the effort to inform ourselves, and then to take whatever action is required to avoid becoming a victim of corporate greed/misinformation.

It would be nice in the future if bussinesses could no longer get away with things like this due to consumer awareness...
but unfortunately for each informed individual, there are a thousand gullible fools that love being told what to think... they will continue to keep this unethical bussiness model alive.

I mean I can't figure out what dumb gimmick purpose the magnet s are for anyways. They don't keep it closed

They're there so you can fold it some weird way and the tablet stays tilted....I can put a book under it and it will stay til ted

Check this out I brought y the edge of the screen close to the folio edge where the magnets are and look at the results. Dead spots at the point where each magnet is !

Count the dead areas between the lines

4 . Exactly how many magnets are in the front of the folio.
