I also think it's a myth

I've had the official book cover case which does have a magnet in it and no issues..

please provide proof before making claims like this

All ipad flip covers have magnets in them and they haven't had any issues
How many iPads have a digitizer? I believe that is where the magnets wreck havoc in the things I've read.

Personally, for as expensive as this tablet is, I can live without that stupid wake-lock feature that sucks anyway. Bought me a case with no magnet just in case.

My lenovo x230 tablet has a digitizer and I've been using a sleeve with a magnet clasp for years. Never had an issue

You are missing out on a great feature of auto wake /lock by being paranoid

Why would samsung even make an official case with a magnet if it would mess it up? They spend a lot of money on research and I'm sure it would have came up in testing

Yes, the magnets cause issues, some are software (as in 4.2.2 firmware) related and some Tech constraints.

1: S-Pen: It uses EMR (electro magnetic resonance) technology and the Gauss Fields/Produced by Magnets in very close proximity cause major issues with pens accuracy. I don't have the original book cover, but an aftermarket one, that also had a closing flap and that also had magnets (that i got rid of) and those did wreck havoc. If you put your back cover behind the tablet and then try to use s-pen over the area that the magnet covers. you might notice some
inaccuracies with s-pen (non straight lines, dead spots, etc ). Though Samsung official cases might have weaker magnets or internal shielding and effect might not be as prominent or noticeable at all, as even with my aftermarket one, the front panel magnet does not seem to affect the s-pen. But the magnet is the closing flap/latch do affect.

Could this cause permanent damage : In long time storage with cover on perhaps it can, if some metallic component inherits some magnetism. Very Unlikely for an average user but still possible. Not worth getting paranoid about a bit.

Here is more info on Wacom Tech : http://www.wacom-components.com/english/technology/emr.html

Note: Samsung might even have a warning somewhere about the magnetic aftermarket covers.

2> In Current 4.2.2 Firmware(CSC : OXA/Germany). The Alarm refuses to sound with the magnetic cover on. Magnetic cover forcing the screen close, for whatever reason is also forcing that alarm to not sound. I as well as other user have had this issue. (this is more of a software issue, but an issue nevertheless.)

Both of the above issues I have experienced first hand and I could care less if they are myth or not, fact is that they caused problems for me, and few other users.

I still use that cover and it still causes the auto wake/locking,But I am cautious how I use it and needed to rip out some magnets out of it.

Hope these provide enough of facts for you. :)

(Note: I am implying issues and not damage and mainly so with aftermarket stuff )

Thank you

Perhaps magnets in 3rd party cases are too strong.

Another reason why not to buy third party cases of the s pen is affected by magnetic fields

It totally depends on the screen display. With LCD displays, the magnet myth is a fact, with LED it doesn't apply.
Only saying these based on my own experience :)

Seems like people are very confused about this. It's NOT the screen, it's the DIGITIZER that is affected by this. You know, the thing the stylus relies on to work.

Yes they are... Also the magnet when closed and turning off the screen is not hurting anything.

It's the case with lots of magnets and then you open your case and flip the cover to the back and all them magnets in the back of the note 8 are maybe affecting the s-pen and digitizer.

I have this case has one magnet and I have no problems at all

Keep it simple :p

Keep using

I am using Samsung book cover one month ago and have no problem either on screen or s-pen but i am not sure the effect about other party magnet case. I believed samsung did their research on the magnetic effect on the note 8 device. i will keep using it unless there has a proof that samsung case causing the device malfunction. ;)

This is the exact thing I've been seeing with my 3rd party case. Nothing permanent, but with the cover flipped back, I lose accuracy over a very small part of the screen. Everything is normal if I don't flip the cover all the way back. Nothing to worry about with magnets.

Do not buy a case with a magnet in it!!

Never buy a flip case with a magnet in it! A friend gave me a finite iPhone 6 plus case and it had four magnets in the case and within one day the screen on my phone started not to work at all and I had to spend $175.00 to my insurance to get a new phone. I was so pissed! So please take my advice and DON'T BUY A CASE WITH A MAGNET IN IT!

I think it depends on the type of case and how strong the magnet is. I've been using a flip case w/magnet on the Note 8 N5110 for years now with zero issues. However, the magnet is not used to secure the flip cover closed but just to turn the screen on and off so is not that strong.
