Tough decisioon time for me today

I ported my personal cell phone number with AT&T for my LG Quantum to Google Voice.

Work pays my iPhone 4S plan directly.

This will let me continue to recieve calls at my personal number on my iPhone 4S, with me still retaining ownership of the number and I'll still be able to take work calls on it with the cell number work provides.

I will now only need to carry 1 phone.

I couldn't justify paying $90 a month to have a 2nd phone. Cancelation fee was about $165. In just 2 months that cost is covered.

I will miss many things about Windows Phone 7 and will probably still tinker at home with WiFi. But my days of carrying it with me are over.

This was a very tough decision for me, because there are many things I like better about Windows Phone 7.

The port is still in progress, but Google says it should be complete within 24 hours.

It's been a fun ride.

Sad thing is I just finally activated fast resume through a registry hack which makes it so Angry Birds keeps going right from where it paused when switching apps.

Boy was this a tough decision. Guess I'll probably be spending more time at the sister site now.

It is sad that see you leaving WP for now, and wish you will be back when WP become more competitive. :)
Thanks.

I would not be leaving Windows Phone 7, if my company did not change the rules.

I used to expense my personal cell phone, since I also used it for work.

But, they stopped letting us do that.

Instead they bought us new iPhone 4S phones with new numbers. They pay that bill directly. I could have ported my number to them, but then they would own the number. I've had my cell phone number for 17 years.

My only option where work pays my cell phone bill is to use an iPhone that they provide.

The iPhone is not a bad phone, but I was really liking Windows Phone 7 and expecting some great things with Apollo.

Microsoft has alot invested in Windows Phone 7 and there are really just a small handful of things that need some attention.

If Apollo is pushed out to the Quantum, I probably will convert my phone to a prepaid just to play with it.

My only reasons for not using it are economics and needing to carry 2 phones.

I see, same situation with me. Company gave you a phone with numbers and must stick with it (just a dumb phone from Nokia), thus I had no choice but choose to bring 2 phone, hehehe.
----------------------------------------------------

A story from me:

A friend of my, lets just call him Adrew, an iPhone owner. When he saw my Mozart, and try to play with it, when I unlock the homescreen for him and he only flick up and down, then he gave me back the phone. He ask me if I only had these apps installed, then I show him the apps list. Later on,he told me that he prefer the iPhone icon grid look rather than WP Tile look because he feel like it is more unfriendly while compared with the icon grid look (and not professional).

Of course I accept his POV. what I try to say is, I think Apple success to implement the mindshare of icon grid looks = professional & user friendly. Or just maybe my friend get too used to the icon grid looks that makes him think homescreen = all apps.

Now using only iPhone - things I miss / things I like

Things I miss the most.

Not seeing calendar events or weather or upcoming alarm time on the home screen.

The People hub. And no way to directly go to a contact. Must launch Phone first.

No easy way to immediately close an app when done with it, like the Back button in Windows Phone 7. I seem to end up with about 10 apps running all the time and need to close each 1 individually.

I liked the large Tiles of Windows 7 because I can easily hit them with my thumb using it 1 handed. They might be bigger than they need to be. Maybe 3 columns of Tiles would be better, and to not waste the space to the right of the Tiles. iPhone is much more difficult for 1 handed use with big thumbs.

A seperate indicator for work email and my combined email and no easy way to dismiss the indicator. This should be easy enough for Apple to do. An indicator for default in one corner and combined in another.

And the Physical Keyboard. (Why can't make an iPhone with a keyboard???)

Things I am liking the most

Apps for everything and they are cheaper.

Use of Google Voice and Skype.

Able to get to all my SkyDrive stuff from my Windows Phone 7 days and add to it as well.

Push notifications are very clear about what they are with an image. Toast notifications aren't as clear to read.

Very easy to make and manage playlists on the phone.

Notification Curtain.

--------------

Both platforms have areas that could be improved.

Best thing for me about going the iPhone route is that work pays the bill.

So, although it is frustrating to lose the things I miss, it's still better keeping $90 per month or ($1080 per year).

Wp7 vs iPhone backup

What about the fact that you can't backup Windows 7 phone completely. This was my straw that broke the camels back. It only does full backup for updates. If you have to swap your phone out Zune backs up tha names of the apps but you have to reinstall them all. I know that methods have been developed but there is no plug and backup method. I was hardcore windows but now that I have the iPhone 4s I am much happier. Windows just feels undone.

I have added this to iPhone Advantages:

22. Automatic full system backup for updates.

Not sure what you mean by "Windows just feels undone." In any case that is not a constructive or descriptive comment and has no business being in this thread.

This thread is not about bashing either platform.

I was not bashing just my opinion on the feel of it. Goodness.
Virtually every comparison thread deteriorates into subjective opinions which eventually turn ugly leading to thread closures by the moderators.

They all start with something small and then things escalate.

Better to nip it in the bud before anything develops.

Someone presenting their opinions as just that is one thing, but you are right that it doesn't take long at all for things to degenerate. Honestly though, I think this is probably the most civil and on topic comparison threads I've ever seen.

But back on topic... +1 for not having to deal with itunes, I've found that iTunes and QuickTime will cause lots of issues on Windows machines and actually cause PCs to become unstable.

I'm not sure if that is as true today as years past regarding iTunes and QuickTime.

I currently have both an LG Quantum and an iPhone 4S syncing to the same computer. So, I am running Zune and iTunes on the same computer. I've had no issues with it.

Zune is easier to manage what directories of songs get syncronized in comparison. Especially if you want to stop syncing a folder.

Both have quirks though, so I don't know if I will add it as an advantage or disadvantage to either.

Am I wrong to understand that zune does a back up restore point for each windows phone before you update it? Isn't that automatic system back up? Ok, it's not full i.e. you can't back up games data and sms, but the rest you can - restore via different routes. Does iPhone do something like single click restore or so? :s not sure!

Yeah, you could be right. It's probably worth mentioning that my last experience with it was on XP and was nearly two years ago now. Even Microsoft's own updates started to make that OS more unstable after awhile

True, much is backed up in Zune, but not everything and it is not as visible.

Everything you install on the iPhone through the app store is automatically backed up to iTunes. This is even if you install it from the iPhone. You can even see the apps when no phone is connected.

Zune only backs everything up when an update is available, not everytime you connect your phone.

Windows Phone 7 will automatically reinstall everything if you need a replacement phone though.

I might need to think over the details of this.

Maybe I should dedicate one of the unused early posts to iTunes vs Zune differences / advantages / disadvantages.

There is alot I am still learning with the iPhone.

I'd love some entirely fact based help with the details. Especially from people that have used both.

Post 8 has been updated to provide a comparison. It is by no means complete. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19652109&postcount=8

I thought wp7 didn't like icons ?
Metrotube isn't needed on any platform other than wp7...
Xbox companion isn't needed on ios, there's an app for that...

@jvh3 are you sure WinPhone restores everything? How? As I've switched phones, hard reset, and flashed custom roms. None have ever restored anything. I have to go into the market press the "buy" button, it will then say "oops its looks like you've already purchased this item. Would you like to reinstall it?".
