It won't show the names of the contacts but it knows the names if you go into the chat itself

I think that might be Hangouts.
but i can't tell for sure.

Anyway i had a similar issue and it stemmed from having multiple gmail accounts on my phone.
Hangouts used account Alpha
Most of my contacts were in account Bravo.

Moved the contacts from bravo to Alpha and the names populated over the numbers.
