unfortunately the g5 motorcycle has no support mhl, you had to have researched a little more before buying the mhl cable, sorry
but theoretically this is just a software / driver missing, because the hardware is good enough to make mhl or Not?

A quick search on lenovos forums you would see it doesn't work

I would use chromecast or something like that - you could probably even setup a bubbleupnp server to stream multiple devices to the tv if you want want to go to that extent

Is there a cheap variant that works with my phone?

A cheap varient of what?

A chromecast is £30
You can get 2nd hand old versions on ebay for like £10
Prices in UK pounds

It depends what you are actually trying to achieve - if you want to cast your entire screen that's the best way

If you just want to cast a video playing on your phone eg YouTube any device with the YouTube app on it that's plugged in the TV can receive it from your phone
If it's a saved video on your phone you can cast that with any 3rd party casting app if you have a device plugged into your tv that has the corrispending receiver app
