I know that bootloader unlocking could be a PITA, but it does not invalidate the warranty (at least in Europe).

Edit: could any of you capture logcat during failed attempt for ROM installation? This might provide additional info on why exactly is it failing. Also you might give ADB sideload a chance, I don't expect it to really work, but maybe there will be some extra info too.
Can you point me in the direction of a tutorial on how to do logcat. From a quick google search, it seems that i need to use ADB ? (I have done this to other phones, that i needed to unlock, because i needed to put newer versions of android on, because the manufacturer abandoned it......Lineage...)

I am more and more sure, that the reason it does not update, is because it does not even try.

The phone is very fast to say "There is no update" and i just checked my pihole server, and when i do a "search for update" on the phone it does not make even one DNS query for the update server. Offcourse the update server IP could be hardcoded into the firmware, but i would say, that is pretty risky.

So i think the problem is that it does not even try to access the update server, and just throws a "there is no update" instead of a "i could not contact the update server".

I have seen multiple products employ the method of "If you can not contact the update server, then just say that there is no update".

I will also gladly help if I can, but I have never unlocked, rooted or used adb, or logcat.

I have managed to start the process to unlock the bootloader though (waiting the 168 hours now) so I'll be back for help when I can finally unlock it.

Capturing logcat is pretty easy, you just need to enable debugging mode on the phone, connect it to the PC and start "adb logcat" from the command line on the PC. Once you start collecting logs, replicate the issue, stop the logcat and upload the logs. You can do 2 logs, one for failed ROM installation, second one for update search from system updater app.

XDA has nice quick quide - https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-take-logs-android/

Just bought this new phone 2 weeks ago .

Tried every "safe"way to get it updating to above 12.0.8 version ,but like the OP , i have the same problem.

Now i trie to unlock the bootloader ... ansd now i have to wait 168 hours to go further.

Are there more things i need to know about xiaomi and this phone ?

One dissapointment after an other ... security patch date = 2020-12-01 ... REALLY XIAOMI ????

I know the problem is the update from android 10 to android 11 , but that should be no problem ... but with Xiaomi it is !

Well, as pointed out above, the problem isn't just going to Android 11, the phone won't even go to the last version of the Android 10 ROM, 12.0.9 without manually doing it.

I had hoped that from that version we might see an OTA update become available, but so far no joy.

I've requested the bootloader unlock too, but I'm also thinking of just handing over to the official Xiaomi service and asking them to do it under warranty, just to see what happens!

I guess that they would just flash the latest rom with locked bootloader through EDL (possible only with authorized mi account). The only drawback is that it erases all the data on the phone (bootloader unlocking does that too though).

I bought my phone yesterday and I have the exact same issue.
Checked also the logs, no useful info there

So the log you posted is the logcat that mysiak asked for ?

In that case i will not bother doing any logcat's here, if it does not show anything. My problem is that the phone is my daughters and a teenage girl is not going to hand over her phone to dad, for him to play around with, so anything i have to do, she has to stand right next to me, to check that i do not look through her text messages and whatnot...I suspect :)

@Overandout....If you give it back to Xiaomi, please keep us updated, maybe they can shed some light on what's what and maybe they even know a magic trick, to make the phone update by itself, or maybe they have a link to a "special" version of the 12.0.1.0 android 11 and after that it becomes possible to upgrade by OTA update.

The thought of having to go to a repair shop and have them manually update the firmware in the phone really bugs me, this function have worked OTA, for every single phone me, my wife and my kids have owned for the last 10 years atleast.

Last time i had to update via a cable and so on, was back when i owned a Nokia, this was in the pre-smartphone era.

Xiaomi ought to be able to make a firmware that the phone would accept, through the "put file on phone, and flash from there" option atleast, for people with this problem...It is clear that we are not the only ones with this...I suspect a lot of users will not even think about their phone not updating.

Xiaomi should take this serious...Imagine x% of their phones not being able to update, and then some exploit is launched against their phones, and people get their data stolen, because Xiaomi botched the update procedure for this phone, making it impossible to upgrade it.

yes, it's from logcat. But I'm pretty sure the issue won't be with our phones, but with Xiaomi's servers. Even if you try to use a downloaded OTA file, the updater generates its MD5 hash, and sends it to Xiaomi's servers together with the current version. If you disable the internet connectivity of the phone, it refuses to upgrade with the downloaded file.

So do i understand it right....The reason i was able to download and run the upgrade from 12.0.8.0 til 12.0.9.0 was because the phone contacted the server and the server allowed it, and the reason it was not able to update to version 12.0.1.0 android 11, was because the server said no ?

If this is the case, i think this is kind of both good news and bad news.

Good news, because this must mean that xiaomi could open up for the updates, on their server.

Bad news because they have not opened it up...I mean, if they have even basic logging, they would have noted that a lot of phones of this model, was refused the update, and have fixed it.

It would have been really nice to get an official answer to this question from Xiaomi or atleast be able to tell them, that there is something wrong here, in case they genuinely does not know that they forgot to enable the updates for certain models, IMEI's or whatever is blocking the updates.

And if i understand it right, if i downloaded the 12.0.9.0 firmware and put it on the internal memory, if i took out the simcard, this update, that was allowed, would then not be allowed, because it was unable to verify it with the servers.

I dont really understand this decision...I know vendors of different products, usually use some sort of identifier in the product, and then an identifier in the firmware, so that i can not flash firmware for one product into another by mistake, but i have never heard of vendors where the sanity check for a firmware and if it is applicable to a certain phone, lies with the manufacturer, and their servers.

I was thinking...If this is only a "Server does not allow" problem, why would it not do OTA to 12.0.9.0 when it allowed it to be put on manually ?

Please feel free to tell them, I have.
In the same menu where we can supposedly select update packages or search for OTAs there is a "comments" menu.
Both when I had 12.0.8 and it wouldn't update and when I got 12.0.9 and it wont update further I have left messages, I have even recorded the screen and attached the video of my phone saying that no updates are available.
The trouble is, if it is just a few of us affected it's probably not economically viable for them to invest a lot of effort in a fix, but the more people that complain the more we might get a response!

I actually found a mail address for Xiaomi UK (Closest one where they were English speaking) and sent them an email last friday, asking why i had this problem, and i even put a link to this thread, to show that i was not alone.

I have not yet received any answer, and i don't know if i ever will, but if they dont reply there, it is just a further comfirmation that i will never buy another Xiaomi phone...Or indeed Xiaomi product.

This is the mail address i mailed them at : [email protected]

Does anyone else have MIUI Downloader installed on their phone?
Mine is sending notifications in the last few days telling me that my phone is eligible for MIUI 13 and that it will be available shortly.

I still have to wait a few days to get the bootloader unlocked but I am thinking that I only want to do this once and then just use the phone with as new a system as possible. So I'm thinking of waiting for the next release which I assume will be MIUI13 / Android 12.

From what I can see, using the phone with a permanently unlocked bootloader is going to be inconvenient (my work accounts may not even work properly without the right security) and if it means a data wipe every time it is unlocked then I'm not going to do that every few months.

I got one notification for the latest update (which of course would not install) but nothing on MIUI 13 (which again, I would assume would not install seeing that the current update its recommending failed to install.

Is MIUI Downloader even official? I figured it was like a community run thing.

No, I don't think that MIUI downloader is official, but neither is xiaomirom.com, xiaomifirmware.com or xiaomifirmwareupdater.com, but we have to get the packages from somewhere.

If you wait for Xiaomi to fix this and send the OTA package you might be waiting a very long time!

Ok so after a little digging around on the Community app people did bring up this problem and the most useful response from someone on the feed back team was:

"Dear User,
Android 11 update has already been released for Mi 10T Lite. But because of an issue, android 10 to 11 update is suspended temporarily for some days. Please wait for the stoppage of this restriction. Thanks for your patience."

This response was from a couple days ago and apparently it has been going on for at least a month.
I'm assuming everyone here with the issue bought the phone recently?

Not at all.

My daughter has had this phone since, atleast before the summer holidays. If memory serves, she bought it back in march or thereabout.

There is a small chance/risk that she would have gotten and dismissed firmware update notifications, even though she refuses.

If they stopped the posibility of upgrading from 10 to 11, that would explain why the phone was able to do 12.0.8.0 -> 12.0.9.0 update, but not android 11 version 12.0.1.0

It also does not explain why it would say that there is no update, when there in fact were the one from 12.0.8.0 til 12.0.9.0 That update should have been available, when asking the phone to check, even if my daughter had refused it in the past.

I don't think the 12.0.9 ROM was ever rolled out over OTA, and that's why it didn't happen "automatically" or appear when checking on the phone menu.

Interestingly, I had a live chat with Xiaomi tech support earlier today and they knew nothing of any suspension to the updates. They confirmed that the phone should have received the update to 12.5 by now but that according to the IMEI there is indeed no update available for my phone.
I was recommended to take my phone to the Xiaomi service centre for them to manually update it. Not sure when I'll have time to do that though!

While that will solve the problem, i really feel this is a bad solution for many reasons, compared to them fixing the broken OTA system.

1. It will only fix your problem
2. You will have to travel to a Xiaomi centre, that is potentially a long way away from home.
3. What "guarantee" do you have, that the phone will not still be unable to do OTA, when subsequent updates are released.

I just checked, there is only one offical Xiaomi store in my country and it is located 392 kilometers from where i live, so for me, that is really not an option.

The best option if i WANT this phone updated is probably to take it back to the store it was bought in, and send it in through them, as a warranty repair claim.

Even though the hardware is working, i would believe that they would be forced to fix it, as software is just as important as hardware.

But since, that would mean that she would be without her phone for weeks, and if would probably be returned in a reset state, i bet she will not want to do that.

If they do not fix the OTA, the phone is probably gonna stay on 12.0.9.0 for the duration of its life, and as stated before, i will NEVER buy another xiaomi product again.
