Mi 4C not resetting. Tried volup+pwr and system setting reset

Hi. I just bought a 2nd hand mi4C online for my simple app dev project. I got this deal for a pretty low price at $80 due to dents and a little crack on screen. However, it won't reset no matter what and he sent it to me with all his downloaded music and stuff. Told him and he said he accidentally forgot because he was busy at that time. I tried volumeup+pwr buttons but to no avail. Tried the system setting factory reset but it only shuts down to ni good. It has his dummy mi account in here and he told me his password but still it doesn't reset via system settings. I'm new to this stuff as I'm more on iOS.

Hi! I suppose it's because you have a locked bootloader so you don't have a custom recovery yet.

You have to unlock bootloader and then set up a custom recovery so when you try to reset, it would take you to the recovery.
