greetings
just received my new mi max 3 (64/4 GB chinese version with latest china developer rom) and im thinking of keeping my lovely max 2 guys

build quality is a step back in many way:
feels noticeably heavier and thicker in hand than max 2
power and volume buttons are a little hard to press
screen is bright more than u need+washed out colors = max 2 screen quality is way better for me
its notification LED is a joke! so smaller and poor light and still white color only!not visible and usable at all in days
full screen gestures always has annoying stutter even with more powerful chipset
battery life is a bit shorter than max 2 (overall one hour less SOT for my daily use)
no scratch resistent screen = scratched mine in just one day!

the only thing is about cameras and new chipset .really a huge upgrade in picture quality+video recording with EIS + selfie camera with LED light
um...are u sure u got an MM3 and not a chinese fake or smth? o_O

well this sux big time. did some research into this and its understandable why xiaomi is doing it, but also veeery annoying for enthusiast users... one more reason to love the hardware but refrain from flashing MIUI. just update the firmware and run custom AOSP based ROMs :) aside from that the MM3 is basically the only phone id consider buying, aside maybe from the poco f1...

Yeah, ARB is really irritating. My original plan was to go MM3 when LineageOS is ready but hate ARB. I suppose the only other phone that is free from ARB is Pocophone F1.

If not, an OCed Max 2 is pretty decent too.

As A Mi Max Series User....

After comparing every tidbits of differences in sizes, weight, and hardware outlook; Even though, the 6.9 inches can make you feel a bit awkward to be weaving it around on the move, the battery sizes and the overall looks of Mi Max 3 had me wonder if it would be better to not worry about its size and let it go for now. Inclusively, just to try it out on the day-to-day operation and seek out the real responsiveness through on-the-go perspective.
The reason behind this choice factor was also because, my current Mi Max 2 had been the device that connects me to every other foreign devices (devices I do not own, but have to come into interaction with by work or daily routine) I do encounter on the daily basis, without coming out from my bag at all.
Not that hard to imagine the possibility of my stated scenario, but let's just say that it had been made possible by using the combination of an in-ear wireless Bluetooth headset with a well trained Google Assistant, and some automation apps which was released by government official agency, whose authority involving traffic / transit & commuting services.

So, in summary, I am going to order it, then try and use it thereafter to test how it is, then make a decision therafter--- for if the performance turned out to be subpar to the other phones in the same league, I shall then return it for the exchange of Pocophone instead. :D

Is there any other phone that we could replace our gorgeous mi max 2? I cannot find anything special. I was eagerly looking for Honor Note 10 but after I read about Huawei new policies on locked bootloader, I changed my mind and looking for something else.

No need to upgrade now even if max 3 is better than max 2 in many ways

2)its a personal preference but i hate the new aspect ratio designs the old 16:9 is the best as content available now is mostly by default in this ratio
3) Snapdragon 625 is more than adequate for any task / 636 is a very good upgrade but i want more power efficiency than performance. ie i want it to give more battery life than get performance
2) -> right, 16:9 is great, 18:9 is awful ;)
3) Snapdragon 625 is a little bit laggy .... my Huawei Mate 9 was broken and I bought the Mi Max 2, because the bigger display, love it :)

been using max 3 for 2 weeks+ now.

1. battery not as great as max 2 BUT still very awesome with 10 SOT gaming, without gaming i get 11~12 hours SOT (with custom kernel)
max 2 i get around 11 SOT gaming, 13~14 SOT without.

2. camera is big improvement. I didn't know that samsung s5k2l7 sensor is exactly the same as IMX362 (totally same spec same structure) and IMX362 was used in lots famous phones like pixel 2 / 2 XL / samsung S8 / S8+ / HTC U11...etc
I've made a few comparison photos in following thread (sorry it's in mandarin :D)
https://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=634&t=5592132

3. screen ratio not as good as max 2 but my eyes get used to it in an hour.

4. with custom kernel, it's on sd660 level regards to bench marks...which probably mean nothing to most ppl since 636 already fast enough for everyone..lol

overall worth the upgrade? for me yeh...just because of the camera has much faster / accurate focus and much better HDR also night shots.

I still keep both of my max 2 tho, such a good series....

Max 4 or 5 may be first 5G Mi Max. Next year only some flagships will have it, midrangers maybe in 2020 or even later...
Please refer the below mentioned article

1)5g is currently beaing tested as we speak ( in india ? lol )
2)the 5g technology (the speed of dara transmission) was always avalable years ago but to make it secure, relaible ,durable, cost effective, energy efficient and broadcast network tower design and specifications like voice call audio codec and bandwidth allocation etc takes time its not easy as listed above thus 5g was delayed for quality and economic efficiency
3)5g modems were avalable since 2016 to be tested by telecom industry
4)5g network was tested in 2018 South Korea winter Olympics
5) and as 5g is going to be deployed the telecom gaints will beagin working on 6g
6)other countries have some tower's ready & working for 5g signal transmission only a 5g reciver which is energy efficient is required for mobile use like Qualcomm's upcoming commercial 50x modem in any SoC (avalable to tech companies since 2016 lol)
7) now the market is getting very competitive day by day as the user is becoming more techaware yes all flagships in 2019 will be 5g but upper mid range will also be 5g
8) mediatek will also launch 5g chipsets which will sell like hotcakes due to low cost thus low end phones will also start getting 5g

True, but next year You won't see nonflagship devices with 5G. I'm sure of this coz of three reasons:
1. Only flagship SoCs eill have 5G modem.
2. (I think most important) OEMs won't add 5G to fast to cheaper devices too fast, so people will have to pay more for "better" devices or stay with 4G capable ones.
3. Only few carriers in few countries support 5G (most says 2020 will be a real startvof 5G coverage).

Same as in the past with 4G - it started in 2012 (probably first devices could be available in 2011), but 2013 was when first midrangers with 4G modem were available on the market. And, believe it or not, Mi Maxs are midrangers.

Switched to the Max 3 as a Canadian user. Had to upgrade, because my Max 2's screen was cracked and my power button somewhat jammed. Getting the screen fixed in HK to be used as a backup tho

I can't tell for sure, but I feel like I've been within LTE range more frequently than my Max 2

ROMs are still lacking on the Max 3 (to be expected), however the phone is Treble-enabled (A- only), which means I can use any GSI (generic system image). These GSI ROMs are basically generic ROMs that can be used by any Treble-enabled phones (simple flash and play).

The increased screen size and improved cameras are nice, and the GCam HDR+ enhanced mode is basically the same as Portrait mode with the dual cameras. This means that instead of waiting for HDR+E to finish taking a picture (load), I can just use Portrait mode and get the same quality, but with an instant shutter.

EIS video camera is also a very nice addition

After many months with MM3 and many fear of ARB, I'm sure that although the specifications are higher than MM2's experience is not. The MM3 CPU 636 works at a very high clock compared to the MM2 and there are several lags in simple tasks. The battery though is longer, but its duration is not.

I still have my MM2 and often still think about going back to it. I haven't done this yet for the sake of the screen, but the operation is much better than MM3.

However, I believe I end my experience with Xiaomi on the Mi Max line here and I think Oneplus is a good new option.

Posting this from my Mi Max 3 running Lineage after using a Mi Max 2 for a year or so - and, yep, its pretty good. The OrangeFox hotboot two stage installation was straightforward and I went straight from latest Miui Global to Perkabalo's 11th October Lineage rom which seems to work fine (but doesn't update that well, apparently...). The ARB crap is scary but I guess if you're just looking for a modern daily driver and aren't interested in flash-fests it's fairly easy to navigate what'll brick and what won't (don't go backwards, basically).

Did the build prop editor fix to allow manual Gcams and that's pretty cool. Big screen is good. I'd forgotten how minimal Lineage is. Needed Adaway and the Edxposed Magisk module to run MinMinGuard and thereby kill off all the sodding ads everywhere.

As I get older (54!) the learning curve feels like it gets steeper every time I do this sort of thing. I got the Mi Max 3 from Cash Converters in the UK for £120 which seems like a good deal (some little scratches on the screen which I've polished a bit with cerium oxide paste). :good:
