dont know if this is the proper place for this post.
i was one of those who got caught for the download last week locking the bootloader. the download was enforced, i couldn't stop it and still dont know how i could have. this week was the same. enforced update and this time it has royally screwed the phone! i know i am far from being any good with phones but after taking this update, the keypad wasn't available any more! with that and the bootloader locked, i didn't know what to do, so opted for the factory reset. it obviously didn't cure the bootloader issue but at least i got the keypad working. what i wanted to do was wipe the phone completely and install a rom of my choice that wouldn't lock the bootloader again, but i dont know how to achieve either of these tasks. more so, after a total wipe, how to go about getting a rom on the phone anyway? and just to add insult to injury, the MiPC Suite doesn't even recognise the phone!!

i sure would be grateful for some help guys, if possible. i've gone from having a phone which to me was very nice to use, to having the biggest piece of c**p going! all because of someone at the manufacturer deciding that the bootloader needed locking 'to protect customers'! yeah, right!!

you can give a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-4c/general/warning-locked-bootloader-t3292891
basically just flash last stable china rom from updater app to easy unlock the bootloader, then flash twrp from pc or update to last unlocked china dev 6.1.7

many tnx for the reply, ice-it. unfortunately, every time i try to do that, the phone insists on being connected to the 'net. it then tells me that the rom i am trying to install, cannot be veryfied and stops the install. i have tried doing that through the 'Update' option and by manually putting a rom on the internal storage, renaming it to 'update.zip', going into 'Fastboot' but all that then happens is the phone produces the outline of the phone on screen with the USB cable either plugged in or out, depending on whether it is plugged in or not. nothing else then happens. i am assuming this is because the bootloader is locked. the need obviously being to get that unlocked. i hoped that if i could do a total wipe of the phone, i might get somewhere. however, when i did the factory reset, i dont recall getting any option to do anything else. even if there was and i missed it, i dont kinow how to then get the desired rom on to the phone and installed.

i'll look at the link you sent me mate, but i have a nasty feeling that what has been caused by Xiaomi being so uncaring and unconcerned about their customers, this phone will be a good paperweight!!

you're making some mistake for me; two methods to revert to china stable that should work:

1) form updater app
2) form recovery
  • place the same rom you downloaded earlier in the root of storage and rename "update.zip"
  • shut down your phone and launch recovery by pressing Vol+ and power buttons
  • choose "install update.zip" by navigating recovery with volume buttons and confirm with power, then wipe and reboot

Let me know...

tnx for the info. unfortunately, neither will work for me. the first method refuses to do anything unless the phone is connected to the 'net. it then says that the image couldn't be verified. trying the second method and regardless of whether i use volume+ and power or volume- and power all i get on screen is 'fastboot'. it stays for maybe a minute and then shuts down. i tried both methods with the file from the link on megashare and the one from the other link. the megashare file isn't recognised when using 'updater' in the phone and when changing either rom to update.zip, i just get the 'fastboot' and then shut down. when trying the 2nd method, i get the outline of the phone with the usb cable.
tnx for trying. would be glad if you can think of something else. how it is at the moment, the phone works but not as good as before Xiaomi interfered.
is a total wipe a sensible option, do you think? any instructions?

I have an issue but I am not sure if it is SW or HW related. Sometimes when I make a call I hear no sound at all but the person on the other side can hear me properly. Does anyone else experience something similar. I found similar threads with contradictory solutions: keep Bluetooth on, replace phone... Do you think this might be fixed in a new rom version?
