It is like pulling the plug on a computer. Personally I don't like it and think it is a bad idea. It shuts down and restarts immediately.
Kind of like this yes, it doesn't actually do any harm though. On a PC, it's dangerous because the hard drive has active i/o and could cause the drive to write incorrectly and corrupt data. But this typically only affects Mechanical drives... Solid State Drives are pretty much not affected by this.

Anyways, the Hot Restart kills the main android system process and forces a restart. This, of course, kills all running apps and system tasks as well.

It's more like... Terminating a Remote Desktop Connection on a server. It immediately kills the active session, ending everything that client was doing without saving or anything.

It really isn't that useful anymore, it was originally created for speed I believe, but the phone reboots so fast as it is now, it's not really useful for that purpose anymore.

It is somewhat useful for devs... like if you want to replace a framework file really quick and test certain little changes quickly. But, again, this is more for development purpose...

But, basically, this function is not very useful for the typical user. If you need to restart, just do a normal one. ;)

mdc odexed zip file is failing in cwm...

Trying to flash the mdc odexed version of this but oudhs is telling me it can't find the files. tried opening files in solid explorer but the zip is corrupted (no longer on ForceROM, went back to stock temporarily). also tried mirrors in the link but those didn't work either.

What is the download option mean under restart? I'm coming from the og evo 4g and haven't seen that before
Og evo welcome I to left HTC for the galaxy but the 3 and now I have the 4.. You have a lot of researching to do my friend dont flash anything until you research and feel comfortable.. I used chainfire root for the 4.. There is no unrooter website for the galaxy.. There are a few postings in YouTube on how to root the galaxy 4.. You can PM me if you like and I can help you as much as I can..

Well, I've messed something up.

I dl'd and flashed (via CWM) the MDL Odex Version and now I'm stuck on the Sprint Splash screen... any ideas on what can be done to straighten it out?

oh, yeah and I forgot to backup first.

What software are you on MDC or MDL and is your ROM Odex or De-Odex?

I thought I was MDL Odex... can I double check from recovery?
I don't have the Odex MDL rom... otherwise I take the file you need to fix it and put it in an update zip for you to flash and get rid of the mod and get it to boot again...

What you need are the files called android.policies.jar and android.policies.odex(or something like that) and they belong in /system/framework/

But you need them from the original MDL odex rom.

I tried, but that didn't help.

Thanks for the helps.

but, being only a few days in, I just factory reset and am now working on restoring what I can.

Next time I'll look before I leap.
I happens to the best of us.. Word to the wise always keep a working backup of your best ROM ready to be restored at any point.. And always have your downloaded ROM on your SD card don't delete it you may need to reflash at any point and time... This will take up a lot of space but worth it.. And do your research first.

Update and choosing the right file

I haven't done the update yet (that annoying icon wanting me to do firmware upgrade is still in my notification bar). So I think I'm on MDC... would that be correct?

My build number is: JDQ39.L720VPUAMDC

I'm on the stock rom.. would I choose deodexed or odexed?

Can anyone tell me if I should do that firmware update? It will break my root then I need to go back to the original kernal... is that right?

You're on MDC. It says it in the build number that you provided.

To check if you're odexed or deodexed download a root file explorer from the app store such es file explorer. Once you do that go into device/system/app. If you see any files with .odex at the end then you are odexed.

Edit: As for the update. It will most likely put you into a boot loop. I would recommend reading more about it first. There are other threads which discuss it in depth.

Will this not work if one's running a custom kernel? I'm now on stock MDL odex rooted with shabby's frandom MDL kernel and crossbreeder and I don't see the menu option anymore.

Wise, wise, wise. I agree with you, and some may not know this. It is so easy to make a nandroid, and it will save you so much energy and time should something go wrong. And something is bound to. Keeping a rom on your SD is paramount as well............. I did however have problems with the MDL Odexed mod. I flashed the MDL Odexed, running the Blu Kuban Odexed MDL. No go, and bootlooped. May have been a bad Dl. I restored a Nan, but when it booted up, I had no data, I got a notification saying my Sim card wasnt in place, booted to recovery and wiped cache, and dalvik and that worked. Booted back up and data was working. Just giving you info on what happened
