[MOD][5.0.2/4.4.x] SMS and WiFi Hotspot for the Nexus 7 3G (2012)

I really appriciate these cool feature. Suddenly on my Nexus 7 (2012 3G) it is not working. After flashing with TWRP (2.6.3.1) I’m always getting a boot loop. I’ve wiped the dalvik and normal cache.

My system was running on Omni Rom Version 4.4.2-20140325-tilapia-NIGHTLY. I’ve upgraded to the actual nightly build 20140326 but with same result.

I think this fix is more for stock rom and not CM11 or Omni.

Not sure mate.

You'll need to ask that question on the Omnirom thread.

Or find another custom ROM that has the function inbuilt.

But it just came to me... SlimKat... Should have WiFi tethering inbuilt!

thank you very much for feedback. I'm sorry for the late reply, but I was on a business trip. I just flashed the SlimKat and wow it is working fine with tethering! Thank you very much that solution!

OTG charging without losing SMS?

Is there a way to add the USB OTG charging feature, without losing the SMS support added by this mod, and preferably without losing all my settings?

I bought an OTG cable with an extra micro USB socket on it to plug the charger into, thinking I'd be able to charge while using a USB MIDI interface. Sadly, no. It does power the MIDI Interface though - at least that stays powered without plugging the micro USB plug into the Nexus - so that should save a bit of battery life instead of powering the MIDI interface from the Nexus's own battery.

I can charge my HTC ChaCha Android phone via that cable too, so it seems to work - it's just that the stock Nexus 7 2012 firmware doesn't let you do that.

I've read of a couple of options for adding charging via the OTG cable, but it's a case of wipe it and start again, as I understand it, and with a kernel or ROM that probably doesn't support SMS.

In general, is that the only way to add a feature that the current ROM doesn't have - i.e. wipe it and install a different ROM or kernel? That seems like a poor solution to the problem, assuming I can find one with all the features I want.

Changing the kernel shouldn't impact this module if you otherwise remain on stock ROM.

I have no experience of doing that, but I'll look into it. Any hints on where to find decent instructions would be welcome. The ones I've found so far are sketchy, at best.
