[MOD] Change Default Resolution to 4k - No root needed!

I'm thinking of buying XZP, and will change its resolution to QHD , since my Nexus 6P already has QHD display and 1080p seems to be a little insufficient.

I've read all of this thread and now I have two questions.

1. As long as I know, XZP basically runs on 1080p and turns into 4k when running 4k apps such as youtube and gallery.
If I change the phone's resolution into QHD manuall, will that resolution-changing feature keep on running and automatically change resolution into 4k with compatiable apps? Or will it be fixed for QHD?

2. Xzp has 4k display and downscale it by an interger multiple to 1080p. If I change its resolution to QHD(which isn't interger multiple), will it look as clear as native-qhd screens like my 6P?

I mean, 6P was released in late 2015, and the 4k flagship smartphone released in 2017 has much worse display quality?

Maybe I'd better buy recently announced razer phone with 120hz display since I heard its display is quite good.

I simply answered your question regarding your concern if the xz premium has a better screen and if you need to run it a qhd to equal the 6p you currently have. It's a silly question but you asked it, so I replied as someone who has experience with both phones. Put simply for you, no you do not need to run at qhd as the screen is already better than your 6p in every way as default

I misread that xzp's screen is worse than 6p, while what you really meant is xzp has better display.

THANK YOU. That prompted me to go check Google's DPI stuff in the app which confirmed this.

BUT it also works with 2160x3840 with DPI 720!

FIXED IT FOR ME:
---> in settings -> display set dpi to biggest (720)
adb shell
wm size 2160x3840
wm density 720
--> yes, 720 here too! Now my dialer works again while the screen looks super sharp!

Edit: Oh man. With these, recents menu worked for a while. Then after a reboot they're black again. What settings do you guys use that also show the content of recent apps?

and ALL work in 4k Native and i solved the issue on touch screen lag

I tried both settings but the phone app keeps crashing on both :/

I just tried and the screen became more sharp but there are few small issue that brake usability:

1) many apps doesn't have a "text size" option, so their texts are very big/small based on the new DPIs (800 makes the characters very very big in most of the Apps, but 600 is very tiny. 720 seems a mid value)

2) many apps (like the pre-installed SwiftKey keyboard) breaks their layout when running in bigger DPIs. The SwiftKey keyboard became very-very big even if set to "very small" in its property: the keys became like a rectangle very tall/hight and less width

3) websites, using pre-installed Chrome, have very tiny text and should be always zoomed-in

what is wm scaling? i have set screen resolution to 2160x3840. and wm scaling is off. if i turn it to auto, does that mean it will display all games in 4k? or if i set the scaling to off, will it then display the games (asphalt 8 for instance) in 1080p? or is that in reverse?

finally find the way to work fully for 3rd party dialer, here is my step

1. change to max resolution and dpi according to OP.
2. install this dialer,i do not know for other one but this is i pick up because apart from default one i love using Google Pixel dialer so i use patch one just download and install normally.

3. Change default apps for phone to the one we install (see photos)
4. See photos for it all works, good thing in my opinion is you do not have to start calling using the one you just install. you just use the stock one as normal it will link to use the one we install automatically. in the meantime before anyone know how to work out for stock dialer (which i prefer more anyway)

The Google dialer is working well for me. No issues anymore. Does anyone know the max resolution before the app switcher stops showing the state of the app? Is there any way to fix this? I think 1440p worked for me, but I can't remember since I changed it so many times tonight.

Also, does anyone know the ACTUAL resolution of this panel? I mean, they say it is a 4k panel, but there's so much scaling and such going on, does anyone know the real verified number of pixels on the screen?

How did u make the dialer work? I tried installing it it asks to update my current dialer and then says app could not be installed

its supposed to be 4k, why does screen resulotion app show less pixels in height? its supposed to be 3840 not 3594...

yes tried it works
it works without issues besides the phone issue but in the posts before some one posted a fix to that you can check it out its just a couple of posts back

Is 4k draining too much battery? Maybe change to 1440x2560, the DPI is 538. Anyone tried it? I'm getting my xzp next week so I'll try it out for 1440p...

Has anyone else had the XZ Premium freak out during navigation? It went insane, lost GPS, cell, signal. It acted like I hit the App switcher button and freaked out entirely. The only change I have is the 4k hack. Has anyone had an issue like this?
