Ima say my experience with this 4k mod
Advantages:
1)far better resolution!!
thats it
disadvantages:
1) phone some times stutters
2) with heavy usage (Like youtube and gaming and constant usage) it overheats and it already showed burn marks on my screen while on 1080 as heavy as you use it it stays cool
3)battery life is a lot worse *Noticeably* A LOT worse especially in heavy usage. (in normal usage though it doesnt over heat a lot it does more than 1080 but still its tolerable and battery isnt bad its almost as good)

conclusion:
this mod is great for you if you are not a heavy user, and want to enjoy really sharp and nice screen (which in my opinion older xperia phones like the Z3 have even better quality on 1080p than XZP with 4K mod activated and also the white balance is much better on older phones like Z3 - I speak from personal experience I compared my phone to my friend's Z3)
still the mod will make your screen look great and sexy if you are not a heavy user then go ahead do it
if you are a heavy user, this mod is simply a device killer.

the screen is really crisp and nice on 4K but even then it is one of the best screens out there but not THE best which really disappointed me considering the fact i bought this phone for its screen let alone the fact that when the device heats, it shows burn marks on the screen...

You can do the same also on your Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4 Tablet, Z5, Z5 Compact ..... and on your crapold device, because this is not changing the display resolution :)

Seriously guys..... this is changing the resolution of the VIRTUAL display (not the physical one), so like this you are getting 4k emulation on 1080p physical resolution.
To change the physical display resolution you need to do "quite a few more steps", which cannot be done in a simple way like this (and surely not without root).

Moreover, even if -- yes, there is a way -- it's not doable on stock ROMs, as it misses the required implementation.
I am almost done here so, on Open Devices, you will be able to get real [email protected] whenever you want.

Cheers!

I am very interested in those "quite a few more steps". I've been looking for a kernel, a method to enable 4K per app, or any info on how to change the physical display to actual 4K instead of emulating it. I have Daydream installed on it, but the videos and other imagery are blurry compared to my 2K Axon7 as it's just lousy scaled up FHD which is very noticeable in VR.

I've had this phone for a week. It's the fastest phone I've owned. Great display and battery life. I installed Aida64 and this is what it shows. So my phone is on 4k? I haven't touched it.
I just installed that same app and mine says 1080 X 1920. Did you install a custom rom? Otherwise, what's your ROM and kernel version?

No custom Rom. I have the US version and put the European firmware on it to enable the finger print reader. Just for fun I included screen on times. This phone is a beast! Who cares about bezels!

for the one who need phone call app that run with this resolution.
You might got 2 birds with 1 stone with "whos call" for
1. this one run with any resolution.
2. If unknown call you it should tell (if there within their data)
so wont you try?
all credit belong to the programmer .
Im just user :)

I thought xz premium was set to 4k permanently? That's what set it aside from the last one I thought. How do I root please? And what is adb and ofc?
rooting is nowadays a more complex procedure as compared to earlier. Take a look at this thread though, and read everything carefully before trying it as it can brick you phone easily if not done right.

adb is 'Android Debug Bridge' - in lay man terms, a command prompt where you can type in commands like in DOS. So for example, you can download adb to your pc, connect your phone by USB and enable USB debugging in your phone options, open adb in a command prompt and then type in the adb commands that OP (original poster) provided on this thread

By ofc he meant 'of course' :)

I just change wm size to 2160x3840 and then change display size in Settings app to preferred view, default dialer works well.
I don't change density in adb, just the resolution.
Done on latest stock Oreo .49

But i turned it into QHD because there some apps have strange layout with 4k res
how do you "change display size in Settings app to preferred view" i dont have "preferred view" in display/view/display size, i only have "small, default, large, larger, largest" - thanks

I found the problem and I have solved it

Thanks, when I set the 4k res, I get the error message "bad resolution"... why?

Your order should also be a number, Don't do that,Enter all the commands together
adb shell
wm size 2160x3840
wm density 807
4K resolution has an impact on speed,so I use 2k
adb shell
wm size 1440x2560
wm density 538

I have read all posts and haven't found this question:
Do the apps like instagram, VSCo, spotify etc show real 4k for the picture they are displaying?
From first sight I wouldn't see development teams provide an app capable of 4k displaying as their is only the Sony z5 premium and the Sony XZ premium capable of this resolution?
Knowing that their would be 2k or less real resolution when using any play store app other than Sony's?

Sent from my ASUS_X00QD using XDA Labs

to be honest I dont know if its real or not and honestly in my sight I dont see a difference...
"TECHNICALLY" there is a difference but using this ADB stuff gets 4k that is just as pleasing as real 4k not a bit less!
these apps support 4k as the resolution using ADB is emulated (upscaling the 1080 to 4k) and not REAL, again "TECHNICALLY".
so using these adb commands you should enjoy "fake" 4k but is just as eye pleasing as real 4k

and yes I spent long minutes comparing pictures in instagram in normal 1080 against ADB 4k and I did see a difference in every app in terms of text and content, and yes so in instagram the picture becomes more crisp, I assure you that

if he used ADB commands and run at 4k the app will show 4k, so if you are not running these adb commands it will show for you 1080p and his will show 4k.
