Unfortunately in the official app any unsupported shortcuts are ghosted out / hidden deliberately as soon as Drive Link is connected to a Head unit. Stupid I know. I've sent feedback via Samsung app support line about all the issues and limitations of Drive Link. I would recommend doing the same so that Samsung know that there are other people who want improvements.

How crap is this it even says in description that you can use apps when connected to unit even says tunein can be used but soon as you plug usb in all apps are removed or greyed out I have contacted app support via email and had email back saying it isn't a samsung app????? lol had a few phone calls they are going to get back to me watch this space...

There is a new version of Drive Link (1.1.026) available as of 19/01/13. I can't see any differences apart from Samsung App store saying it's compatible with ICS. It still does not allow me to change my default navigation app or use apps I've set in shortcuts when connected.

Is there anyway the OP can modify this latest version to use the home button trick? The original apk j0ep0 provided works great for allowing me to access my home screen and apps but I find there is a lot of lag with videos. Maybe the newer version works better?

Hi All,

After a long battle I managed to get a reply from the Samsung Drive Link development team on some questions I had regarding the issues with this app. Thought I would post here so that everyone can see the responses so far. I have since replied back to this for further clarification on some of the answers.

1. The Drive Link application has a background task which prevents the phone from switching off the screen EVEN when *NOT* using or running Drive Link on the phone. i.e. everyday use of the phone the screen fails to turn off the screen after the pre-set time limit. Killing the Drive Link background task temporarily or uninstalling the app is the only way to fix this. Not good!

[Drive Link team] This issue is already fixed. Would you check version 1.1.026 from samsung app store?
- CONFIRMED THIS IS FIXED IN LATEST APP.

2. When running Drive Link hooked up to a MirrorLink compatible head unit the application keeps the screen on the phone. If you are using MirrorLink to display the phone on the car dashboard headunit screen you do NOT want the phone screen to be on for a number of critical reasons. The first being that the phone screen can be easily touched by accident when it is stowed in my arm rest for example. The second is that with the screen on constantly the power consumption and heat generated by the phone is very high! In some cases my phone has locked up and overheated forcing me to hard reset the phone during navigation.

[Drive Link team] In Jelly Bean, screen update is not supported when screen is turned off, so we determined not to turn off screen. It is temporary solution. To solve this issue, we need change of android platform. Unfortunately, current android platform can't support it.

3. The volume setting within the Drive Link application is forgotten about when you next start the application. The default volume (half) is far too low for my car speakers and I have to go through all the menus each time I use drive link to increase the volume. It should remember what volume level you left it on the previous time it was used, not reset it back to the default of half.

[Drive Link team] In mirrorlink mode(this means that smart phone is connected to head unit), whenever smart phone is connected to head unit, volume is setted as 50%. We will change volume policy. First time volume is setted as 50%, from next time volume is setted as previous value. This change will be included in next binary release.
- THIS NOW APPEARS TO BE FIXED IN LATEST APP.

4. Functionality needs to be added to allow music to be played from the MAIN headunit whilst MirrorLink is running. It does not make sense to only be able to play music from your phone. I have all my music on a very large USB key permanently attached to my Alpine ICS-X8 head unit, I do not want to have to keep a second copy of all that music on my phone too! The Nokia Drive application allows this for Nokia phones via an API I am told by Alpine support. This allows you to control and play music from the main head unit
which is better than playing it from the phone.

[Drive Link team] As I know, implementing this concept needs long time. We need more time.

5. Functionality needs to be added for a full application "Mirror Mode" like on Nokia Drive. This lets you mirror the entire phone or ANY application on the car headunit screen. This way it doesn't limit you to specific applications.

[Drive Link team] This is concept that is requested by head unit company.

6. Need application support for Sat Nav software such as TomTom, CoPilot or Sygic, iGo, etc. Not just the standard Google Navigator which is very limited.

[Drive Link team] You're right. But we don't know package name of all navigation application. If you let me know package name of navigation application, I can permit to use navigation application you recommended.

- ANYONE KNOW WHAT THEY MEAN BY PACKAGE NAME EXACTLY?

Should you require any further information don’t hesitate to contact us further regarding this.

You can also contact the drivelink team directly regarding this via; using the “Email seller” function that exists at the application details page on Samsung Apps.

Hope this is useful. I will post further responses once I receive them if people are interested.

Latest response from the Drive Link team :

[Drive Link team] In Jelly Bean, screen update is not supported when screen is turned off, so we determined not to turn off screen. It is temporary solution. To solve this issue, we need change of android platform. Unfortunately, current android platform can't support it.

[My Response] So is this is something that is planned to be supported in a future Android update?

[Drive Link team] For reference, new screen update policy of jelly bean is to solve battery drain problem. Discussion about this issue is in progress, but I'm sorry that I don't know exact schedule.
Because it may need cooperation between Samsung and Google and complexity of this issue is very high.

[My Response] So are there plans to do develop this feature? As long as there are plans to implement this then I would be happy even if it takes some time to complete.

[Drive Link team] I understand concept roughly. Would you explain it step-by-step on nokia phone?
Do you mean that you want to play H/U's music file in Drive Link application?

[My Response] Alpine support described to me that with a Nokia phone attached to their Alpine ICS-X8 headunit the
music that is connected to the second USB port (either a USB key with music or iPod) the music from these devices
can still be used and controlled while MirrorLink is running Sat Nav Software. So essentially the physical buttons on the
Alpine headunit and the steering wheel controls can still be used to change and control the music track playing on the Alpine
unit while MirrorLink is running still. Also I think they can temporarily switch out of MirrorLink while it is running to get to
other menus on the headunit, then switch back to Mirror Link again while it has been still running in the background (like ALT-TAB
in Windows). By doing this you can still get to the headunit screens and search for music tracks on the headunit and change track
etc. or even switch to local Radio stations. Then flip back to MirrorLink app which is still running Sat Nav in the background.

I think if the Sat Nav application running in MirrorLink speaks a command like "turn left after 100 yards" it speaks over your music
which is fine. You wouldn't want it pausing or muting your music every 5 seconds there is a driving command anyway.

As things currently stand with Drive Link you have to have another duplicate copy of your music on your phone
or just drive around in silence with no music at all. Also you then have to use "another" interface to find music tracks. In
addition I don't think the Drive Link music app works with steering wheel controls which is less safe when driving. The
underlying Alpine unit does this.

Awating feedback on this.

5. Functionality needs to be added for a full application "Mirror Mode" like on Nokia Drive. This lets you mirror the entire phone or ANY application on the car headunit screen. This way it doesn't limit you to specific applications.

[Drive Link team] This is concept that is requested by head unit company.

[My Response] There are many head unit companies though. Alpine already have "Mirror Mode" enabled for Nokia devices as can be seen on their firmware update page here :

http://www.alpine.co.uk/support/firmware-map-update/ics-x8-firmware-update.html
1. Firmware Update Contents

Activates NOKIA MirrorMode (full control mode) << !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enables NOKIA Call
Compatibility for NOKIA Drive with MeeGo (Nokia N9)
Compatibility for Android based phones with MirrorLink capability

So if MirrorMode is activated for Nokia devices on the Alpine unit then surely there should be no reason why Android devices can't be either. All that Mirror Mode does is allow VNC to display the entire phone to the screen. This would solve a lot of problems for people who would like to run any application. If there is a worry or concern on your part with compatibility, could you not just add the feature as a BETA or "experimental" feature which you have to activate in the options somewhere? You could always add a disclaimer stating that not all applications may work as expected or something, but at least give us the option or possibility to run other applications please. :)

[Drive Link team] MirroLink is standard of CCC(Car connectivity consortium). CCC and car company want to limit "Mirror Mode".
And our team decide not to use "Mirror Mode" for driver's safety.

[My Response] Nokia is part of the CCC also and they have "Mirror Mode". At least have it as a hidden option with a "disclaimer" or something. Or perhaps use the GPS to
disable "Mirror Mode" if the car is in motion.

Looks like "Mirror Mode" unlikely to happen in Drive Link guys, so I wouldn't hold your breath on an official version of this feature :(

[My Response] What do you mean by package name exactly? I think the package name might be "com.tomtom.weurope".

[Drive Link team] I mean that package name is "com.tomtom.weurope". I'll enable TomTom navigation in Drive Link.

So if you have other Sat Nav software or other regions of TomTom you want supporting, contact the Drive Link developers directly by sending an email to [email protected]. You'll need to provide them with the package name as mentioned above. Hope that helps.

My setup:

GS3 with sotmax v.14 4.1.2 Rom (the best so far)
Kernel yank555 v. 3.1

Drivelink 1.1.0.26

Just tested the TMServer with Drivelink .26 and get this:

- Installed Drive Link .26
- Flashed TMServer
- Open drivelink on GS3 and connect the phone with USB cable
- Wait for drivelink start on XAV 601
- When it finished start, press HOME button on the phone and voilá, you can control all your phone applications.

SOME ISSUES:
- Chrome does'nt work;
- Angry Birds crash when begin;
- Pinch to Zoom does'nt work (on internet or photos);
- Crashes sometimes;

As far i've tested, the rest is ok. Waze, some other games, the default browser, email, videos, gallery, music is working ok.

GOOD WORK and THANKS FOR THIS APP!!!!

The latest Drive Link 1.1.027 now supports TomTom Wesern Europe via MirrorLink. Tested it today and it works pretty well although TomTom doesn't appear to be using the GPS passthrough from the headunit which is annoying. I thought that if Android picked up on the GPS passthrough it would work with all apps. Gussing maybe TomTom have hard coded their app to the inbuilt phone GPS device

Any known working configuration with Alpine ICS-X8?

Is there any known working configuration with the Alpine ICS-X8?

I tried andmoc's config with almost exactly the same rom, etc:

ROM: sotmax v.14 4.1.2
Kernel: yank555
Drivelink 1.1.0.26, tried also 1.1.0.27
but with my Alpine ICS-X8.

When I press the home button while connected, the GS3 goes to home screen, but the connection seems to be cut. The ICS-X8 leaves mirror link mode and shows the mirror link icon. When i click on that, the GS3 switches back to the drive link app. Tried other ways using task manager or widgets, it does not seem possible to trick the GS3 into home screen or other apps without the connection beeing cut.

I also tried some other roms and other kernels, same result.

So: Did anynone manage to get full mirroring working with an Alpine ICS-X8? And if so, can you please post your config?

I have yet to have any 'added' functionality while connecting my S3 (stock, cm10 or NXTgen roms), to my ICS-X8. :crying:

I've not been able to get he DriveLink full mirroring hack mod to work with the Alpine ICS-X8. I saw the same symptoms as you did. I was told to try a different launcher but still see the same issue. I am running on stock Jelly Bean on my S3.

I've given up on the hack as progress died pretty quickly. I am continuing to pester the official DriveLink developers instead to get things fixed and improved officially. Its slow progress but so far I managed to get them to add TomTom Western Europe to the MirrorLink whitelist as mentioned in my earlier post. Full mirroring will never "officially" appear though as they say it goes against the safety rules of the Car Consortium. Strange as Nokia has it and they are in the CC I believe.

I am looking at buying a new radio but waiting for something that works well with my Galaxy S3. So I was wondering did the car dock ultra app in the play store? I use this app as my default car dock and you can select what apps you want on your home screen.

That app ist not a mirror-link application. So you will need to get full mirroring working in order to use that app. As I understand it, currently there is no known configuration (at least not to me), that works with the Alpine ICS-X8. There is a full mirroring app for the Pioneer though (although i have not tested it, since I have the Alpine).

FYI, I wouldn't touch a Sony with a 10 foot pole. I have the XAV-601BT and the user interface is terrible and Sony has not updated the firmware to fix bugs and complaints at all. Mirrorlink isn't worth it with that unit either due to limitations of the DriveLink app (not being able to use any music streaming app, etc.), not being able to listen to music from the headunit while Mirrolink is active, and the phone battery draining like crazy due to the screen and network power draw not keeping up with the charge through the USB cable... I can't speak for Pioneer or Alpine, but I wouldn't buy a Sony for the Mirrorlink capability and I certainly wouldn't buy it for any other reason, either.

j0ep0 and I are currently working to get the mirroring that we were promised working with Drivelink and the Galaxy S III. Currently we have mirroring working successfully but there are a few bugs with the Drivelink app getting wiped and restarted. Here is a list of everything so far:

Full Mirroring without the drive link app resurfacing - Working (random restarts due to memory cleanup in android)
Work with Any Launcher - Currently Nova and Apex work
    Reassigning the Home button -
Bypassing the two warning Messages -
    Compatibility with Non-touchwiz Roms-
    Compatibility with Other Devices -
Dim or turn off Phone screen when mirroring-
Automatically go into launcher (minimizing drivelink) -

Currently the setup we have is working for the following devices:
    GSM Galaxy S III
CDMA Galaxy S III (No Data)

If it is working on your device please post, or PM me with the Following:
    Carrier
    Phone Model
    Any Bugs
    Rom/Kernel (If custom)

    Installation Instructions:
    Code:
    Non-root:
Go into Settings and Enable "Install from Unknown sources"
Install the APK and run it.
Plug into your head unit and pray.
This method has worked for some (including myself) and not for others.
It will give you the standard Drivelink app and
no custom code by us, you need root for that.

    Rooted users:
Download the TMServer zip to your Phone
Reboot into recovery and install (Like a ROM)
No need to wipe anything, you're just replacing
a system APK which is why you need root.
Install the Drivelink APK after enabling Unknown sources.
Run the Drivelink app and plug your phone into the head unit,
After accepting prompts you should see the drive link app.

There are several ways to get to your stock home screen but the easiest for me is to hold your home button down the bring up task manager, Click on another open app, when it opens hit the home button and viola, you're at your home screen. We are trying to find a way to bypass this but drivelink puts the phone into car mode and that disables the home button. Car mode is required to get the audio to route correctly to the head unit.

    Here are the Links:
TM Server- Must be flashed in a custom recovery:
    TMServer

Drivelink- Remove all versions, allow unknown sources and install this apk:
    DriveLink

Both j0ep0 and myself have full time jobs and families so we are working very hard to get this working on our own time. So please be patient. We will get this working fully!

Nice description write up by Olywa123, Thanks

    What is it
Drivelink is Samsung's application used to facilitate ‘Mirrorlink’ connectivity with supported car headunits. Currently their are several aftermarket car stereos by Sony, Alpine, and JVC that support this technology. The majority of users here have the Sony XAV-601BT headunit but it is believed the protocol for connection is the same for each. This standard is known as Mirrorlink (formerly Terminal Mode) and uses the VNC RFB3.8 protocol allowing for two-way communication between the smartphone and headunit over a usb connection for both display duplication and key-inputs and uses Bluetooth A2DP for Audio.

    Videos
The following videos best provide a summary of this technology
    Mirrorlink Overview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWNpK...eature=related
Example of MirrorLink on XAV-601BT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsT1l8bLOfU (shows Nokia and Samsung phone support)
    Example of Drivelink App: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHVmogapY9U

Why The Drive Link App needs Modification
Although Samsung have released the Drivelink application, this is not only very limited but also compatible only with the Galaxy SIII currently. It provides a ‘dashboard’ interface allowing for the use of only stock Music, Phone and Navigation (limited to Google maps) functionality. You cannot get back to your phones home screen or run any other apps while Drivelink is running/mirrored on the headunit and killing Drivelink kills the interface meaning the stereo no longer sees and mirrors the phones display. This appears to be a restriction coded into the Drivelink software as the video above shows that the Nokia interface allows for full phone control in addition to just the Nokia released Mirrorlink app on Symbian (Car Mode).

Full Mirroring is ready and fully functional.

    Hi All,

After a long battle I managed to get a reply from the Samsung Drive Link development team on some questions I had regarding the issues with this app. Thought I would post here so that everyone can see the responses so far. Drive Link works on CM10, but the screen mirroring app doesn't.
