I've always used PA's gapps, I'm curious, is there a benefit to using these besides the new theme and prepackaged 38r camera+gallery?

Not much. Updated Apps, Ota scripts for various roms so you don't need to reflash gapps after ota flash. The beta versions will probably maybe be nixed as the mods are outdated or already included in most Roms. Especially when Android L comes out.
