I got rid of the navigation bar on my non-rooted Nexus 6p (Oreo 8.1) using a different substratum theme I found on the Play Store. It's called Samsung System Mods. It's built for Samsung phones and so some tweaks won't work but I can confirm that changing the navigation bar size to 0 does! After applying I had to restart my phone to see the changes.

Didn't had much hope that it will actually work with non rooted Oreo when reading the last posts.

But it's working pretty good. See attached screenshot.

Nav bar has now the exakt same height as the status bar.
But one minor issue:

Is there a way to make the navigation icons slightly bigger?
I think it would look nicer and more like the height is supposed to be like that.

Thanks.

you're a lifesaver, dude stock navbar is WAY TOO fat! 36px is perfect for me. this overlay is minimal and does just what you need it to with no extra fluff and that's beautiful

should really consider open sourcing this and throwing it on a git service! I know it's small, but that's all the more reason to honestly. help keep this small overlay alive for years to come!

EDIT: working for me on LineageOS 17.1/Android 10 on LG G3!
