Anyone know why the gingerbread modem is the most popular? Is this the best functioning? Been having trouble holding a connection with xxLRK (in the US on Straight Talk AT&T). Thanks!
I have the same problem, ATT SUCKS! If the area isn't crowded it works fine, but when you're on a congested tower, it would just disconnect all the time and barely work, if at all.

I flashed some older radios and they don't disconnect, but the service is still terrible. Sometime I get dial up speeds. Good job ATT - biggest pos telco (and thanks govt for allowing them to conglomerate back together to make an uberultrapileof****).

Hey, better than Verizon.

Apple innovates and Samsung copies, huh? Tell that to my galaxy note :D

I just want to report a result. I just switched from XXLB2 to XXLR1 on a CM9 based Paranoid Android. A couple of TP-tests shows i have gone from around 5,4Mb to around 6,6Mb downstream . The respons time is better as well. Around and below 70ms.

I live in sweden and use Telenor.

im not sure, can someone help me? lets say i flashed GB 2.3.3 Netherlands, that gives me kernal N7000xxkj4, should i then also use modem kj4?
If you have fashed XXKJ4, it is not necessary you will have modem XXKJ4, it may or may not be.
Unfortunately ROM file name never contains modem version. Netherland XXKJ4 file name will be like this N7000XXKJ4_N7000XENKJ2_XEN.zip. XXKJ4 stands for PDA/kernel while XENKJ2 is CSC, but no modem info. If you want to install modem for perticular ROM (e.g.KJ4), then download that ROM and extract modem.bin from that ROM and flash using Mob Odin)

If you have root on your console and know what you're doing,

dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p8 of=/sdcard/modem.bin

will dump it to the 'modem.bin' file on your internal emmc

BTW I'd like to ask the experts something that intrigued me:

The modem partition has 16777216 bytes while all modems here -- at least several of them -- have exactly only 12583168 bytes.

Is the dumping method which is cutting the images at that offset really sane?

Maybe I'm missing something... just wanted to confirm.

OK, so let us suppose for a minute we know what we are doing and we want to backup the specific baseband that came with the phone before experimentation (GT-N7000 with baseband N7000XXLPT). I followed your instructions, but I cannot get the modem.bin I extract to match the one I pull from the XXLPT directory from the server mentioned in the OP.

Over ADB:

[email protected]:/ $ su
[email protected]:/ # dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p8 of=/sdcard/modems/xxlpt/modem.bin
32768+0 records in
32768+0 records out
16777216 bytes transferred in 3.263 secs (5141653 bytes/sec)
[email protected]:/ # md5sum /sdcard/modems/xxlpt/modem.bin
9e7fa07139159e7f6e68407ebd930284 /sdcard/modems/xxlpt/modem.bin
[email protected]:/ # exit
[email protected]:/ $ exit
Now, on my Mac:

my-mac-name:Downloads username$ adb pull /sdcard/modems/xxlpt/modem.bin ~/Downloads/xxlpt.modem.bin
my-mac-name:Downloads username$ wget http://galaxynote.rgreat.ru/Modems/XXLPT/XXLPT.zip

2012-10-09 16:31:30 (35.6 KB/s) - ‘XXLPT.zip’ saved [4881531/4881531]
my-mac-name:Downloads username$ unzip XXLPT.zip -d ~/Downloads/XXLPT
my-mac-name:Downloads username$ md5 XXLPT/modem.bin
MD5 (XXLPT/modem.bin) = 34675206fd254618e1709831708b2afb
So, as you can tell, I am kind of at a loss. I imagine I need to offset it, but I am not sure what that offset should be, since I am an idiot. I really want to ensure I have backed up that BIN properly before moving forward, since I have learned my lessons before. Any suggestions from you or others? I cannot find a good HOWTO on this and will not move forward before backing up later. Thanks.

On a related note, how can I make a package with my own BIN file? Can I just drag, drop, and ZIP my own radio? It would appear from the META-INF/com/google/android-updater-script it will work so long as modem.bin is, well, modem.bin. Due to the very important nature of this, I just want to make sure.

Usually, LR1 is the best choice.

And by the way if you phone periodically lose connection i'll copy this for you:

Network disconnecting?
This is due to RIL crashes and bug in the stock cm10 kernel, a few solutions that might or might not help:
*) is either using a custom kernel if its updated with r3p0 driver.
*) change cpu governor to conservative.
*) if you dare, disable sim pin code check.
*) some reports that changing modem actually helps.

Leaked Jelly Bean modem XXLS1

Here comes the XXLS1 modem from the stock Jelly Bean firmware that was leaked about half an hour ago. The modem can be flashed via CWM and it's working fine with ICS 4.0.4.

By the way, we have to wait for some rom developer to make an installable package from the leaked firmware files. So stay tuned and stay calm. ;)

Credits for the leak go to eybee1970, see the JB thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737939

Sorry for the noob-ness, but what benefit would I gain from using JB modem with ICS 'stock*' ROM?

Sent from my Galaxy Note

*I'm not on a 100% stock ROM but on a pre-rooted and with HydraCore kernel

Maybe the newer modem performs better (e. g. faster data transmission). Maybe it drains less power from the battery. But it even may perform worse than the older modems. We just don't know. But now you can give it a try if you're an adventurous guy. ;)

Hmm, I see. If it's not any good, can I just go back to the stock modem or do i have to do a factory reset for that?

I'm on N7000DDLR1 baseband now.
