Because some radios built for other region might work better in your region, and because of these differential builds in it's firmware, different radios also contribute various result to it's kernel used, in the end a lot is based considering your geographical location of cos...

IN the Netherlands it work fantastic.

modem LP5 is on stock LP9.

LR1 seems fast but connectivity in terms of signal strength is bad , lesser bars in areas of low signal this drops and shows no connectivity where most other phones have a bar or 2

After flashing XXLR1 I am able to call and send messages, but NOT receive calls or text messages! I've tried several other modems ZCLP6, XXLA4 and my original XXKK5 again, but it seems to have stopped working. Have tried both Mobile Odin and CWM
The flashes are successful and I have data access, and great reception but whenever soemone calls me they're immediately redirected to my answering machine and the text messages never get received at all although I can send them myself.

Anyone have any ideas how to solve this?

Forget it. Turns out that by pure coincidence my carrier had technical issues, right after I flashed, causing this, so it wasn't the modem!

just to share,

those who in asia region especially Singapore & Malaysia, the official ICS modem is DXLP5. you can download and flash over mobile odin if you are on custom ICS ROM.

It works in Austria at least, so should work also in Italy!
