I'm confused! You went from an ICS modem to a Gingerbread one and it was better?

Can you even run a GB modem on ICS?

Also, are you talking about real-world reception, or just more bars on your phone, as this could be a software tweak to the bars shown, without any real noticable signal change?

Just got confirmation that any modem can run on any ROM.
Modem is afaik independent, can mix them freely.

Took the only measure I have at hand, db/aus under settings/about/status. Went from some 110+ to 79+, quite a difference. As of bars (which, agreed, are tweakable), from 0/1 to 3. That has been around home, will keep an eye on the go, though.

As of call quality, it's always great, even with no bars shown :)

Data proof missing still, too. Didn't have time for that yet.

BTW: also get more bars on wifi, but don't know how to verify effective signal vs. optic tweak.

Most Wifi apps will show something like: (I use Wifi Buddy)
Level: -75 bBm (53%)

Higher % is better.

Make sure your phone is in the exact same spot for your testing and comparing.

Sigh. Lokks like I'm getting old... Yes, obviously. I'll give it a try. Thanks for waking up my brain...

Thanks for the useful topic. :)

Is there any specific app that can help determine which modem is good for your phone, something like Quadrant for instance?!

Your eyes and ears!
Compare your network signal and wifi signal after flashing a new modem.
You might need apps for this (wifi at least).

I was getting better battery life with LPF > official UK update LQ2.

Noticed that LQ2 has an older modem, so i've just flashed LR1. See if it makes any difference.
Exactly what I have just done, I hope it makes difference too.

I was on LPY ROM and battery was great, the LQ2 ROM or radio has rubbish battery life. Really hope this works as I am from the UK and would like to keep stock UK ROM.

Hi and thanks for this excellent post.

I'm in the UK with T Mobile running imilka's CM9, and I just tested LA4, LB1, LB2, LP6, and LR1. I found the modem which gave the fastest speeds and strongest connections was LB2, on both the TM and Orange networks. I haven't tested battery life with it, but given the strength of the connection I think it's less likely to drop and search for other networks as everything everywhere phones do now.

Have other UK TM customers tested these modems, and did you receive different results?

PS - I flashed with CWM with no problems, despite being on the leaked ICS Rom (although more experienced users might advise against this)
