This is the correct procedure to restore the backup but usually when we want to restore a backup in ics the device would be with a messed up root so the kernal installation would fail. The restore is a little tricky. Follow these steps and you should be ok.
1. Download and install Abyss Kernel 4.2
1.1 DO NOT LOAD ICS WITH THIS KERNEL. This is a gingerbread kernel, but it is loaded with RedPill Touch Recovery using a more recent version of ClockWork...
1.2 The menus are a bit different but it is easy to manage
2. Reboot to recovery (in the advanced menu)
2.1 You are in redpill
3. Restore your Nandroid
4. Reboot! You're done.
The Abyss kernel can be found in its own thread in this section.
Don't forget to press thanks if it helped.
Personally I follow these steps which is a little lengthy [ About 20 minutes ] but does the job for me always :
1- Reboot the note into download mode and flash any stock rootable Gingerbread [there is a thread in the development section with the complete list of all stock roms] rom with odin.
2- Root your note and install cwm recovery.
3- Reboot to recovery and install Abyss Kernal then from the advanced menu chose reboot recovery.
4- Install the rom you want to restore its backup [ I Do not think this step is substantial but with my asus transformer sometimes the backup would cause a bootloop if i have not done that ].
5- Now restore your backup and you will have your backup running in the note and the root will not be lost.
Hope this will Help
