I figured we'll need a consolidated modem thread at some point. We have several ROMS that have one or the other. All of the Modems are CWM zip'd up for your flashing pleasure. I've leave which is better up to you.

Modems packaged in support of AOSP based ROMs

Thanks to RockRatt we have the modems packaged in support of all AOSP based roms (i.e. CyanogenMod 7&9 {CM7&9}, MIUI, AOKP and AOSP). Those compatible CWM versions can be found here:

So flashing a modem... does it help get better data speeds?

If you're asking which is better, then the answer is... it depends on many factors. The best I can offer is to try the one you aren't currently using and give at least three days. Then you can't make your own assessment. Good Luck.

In theory it does. Some modems work better in different coverage areas. Maybe some one with knowledge can explain different modems.

@peaster111...
or any brave soul willing to risk their phone...

There are one or two additional modems that may be obtained for our phones, but there is some risk involved. There have been three leaked versions of the stock firmware so far, UCKJ1 and UCKJ2 in addition to the latest JCKJ4. All three of these were posted by designgears on the RootzWiki developers forum, and two of them here on xda in the general forum. UCKJ2, and probably UCKJ1 as well, were posted as Odin3 one-click downloaders containing alternative bootloaders along with the firmware and modems.

Warning: One, and probably both, of these one-click downloaders contain modified secondary bootloaders that prevent the use of the jig to reset the flash counter. After flashing these leaks, it would be necessary to flash back the original secondary bootloader posted by ach1701. There is a certain amount of risk involved in flashing bootloaders, and for various reasons, neither myself nor RockRatt has been willing to put our phones at risk.

To extract these modems, it would be necessary to install the leaks on your phone, then use adb or terminal emulator to extract the modem.bin file, return your phone to it's current state, perhaps with a nandroid backup, and then flash back the original secondary bootloader. Someone with a development phone may be more willing to risk this.

The specific directions to do the extraction can be found in this post.

Edit (8th December 2011): With the new tool "Mobile Odin", it is now possible to flash the Odin One-Click Downloader executable files safely without flashing the jig disabled secondary bootloader. Mobile Odin cowardly refuses to flash PIT, IBL/PBL, SBL, or EFS, even if present in the files. Additionally, after all of the available partitions have been loaded, any except Kernel and System can be cleared before flash.

I followed the link to the cm7 modem since I'm on MIUI. My data speeds on speedtest and speakeasy are slower by average.

However, my daily performance has a significant increase. Maybe speedtest doesnt show, but it seems my data connections are much more stable. When I want to download an app it begins downloading faster.

My end result I think is faster data.

I tried go see if DG had them since he originally messed with those two leaks but I never beard anything back. Ya I messed with bootloaders once too many time on my Cappy so not messing with them now. Glad to see the cwm versions for the samsung based roms too. I haven't been on a Sammy rom since day 2 so I didn't get around to making them.

For those of us still learning about all this, a few questions:

#1 - Do these terms refer to the same thing? modem, radio, baseband

#2 - What does a "good modem" affect? both battery and data speed or just data speed? Does it affect anything else?

#3 - Does the best fit for any particular phone depend? the ROM or the area of the country or something else?

TIA

1. Yes

2. Signal strength and data speeds (for wifi as well). Improved signal strength leads to better battery life, so it affects that too. Nothing else comes to mind. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

3. Best fit depends on the area. Even down to the neighborhood and specific device in my opinion. A modem that works amazingly well for someone else may be horrendous for you; you just have to give it a run.
