With KJ4 today I got 5.9 down and 1.1 up in my 3g area. No issues with voice calls. Seems like a decent upgrade so far!

I flashed the new modem to Serendipity 8.2. Download speeds seemed to increase from an average of 0.8 Mbps to around 2.0 Mbps. Upload speeds dropped from 1.10 Mbps to about 0.83 Mbps.

Call quality is the same as before (no issues).

I hope I flashed it right (I'm new to Android). I extracted the zip file, loaded Odin, put modem.bin in the "Phone" section, and clicked Start.

Also, don't mind the slow speeds. I went to an AT&T store 3 days ago to compare my phone. They had their phones connected to the at&t wifi and wouldn't let any phone do speed tests. I managed to find a phone that I could sneak a speed test on, and that phone went slower than my phone. Apparently my speeds are typical in the "confirmed 4g area" that I live in. This modem seems to help a little, especially since I spend more time downloading than uploading. ;-)

i ran some tests with speakeasy speed test. these are the results. note i am using the modified apn(i would have done one with stock too but i couldn't find what it was and didn't want to flash back to an old rom just to get the apn.) the format is UP/Down and the stuff in () is over wifi. i took the best of 3 runs for each. and i live in the suburbs of chicago

ATT MODEM(H7) 4.75/1.75 ( 5.76/.87)
CUSTOM MODEM(J4) 2.73/.81 (5.75/.84)

the wifi didn't show any drop which may be expected but the Mobile network went down significantly

What I learned from the captivate and modems is that some modems work better in areas and others work worse. That is why on the captivate I flashed MANH different modems until I found one that worked best for me and the area I was in on my phone. So whenever a new modem comes out it doesn't hurt to try it out. Also is why I put the stock modem in here also.

Hmm, think these would work with the i9100?

I tried some i9100 modems and they didn't work on my phone. I got good data, good reception, but when I called my voicemail I had no sound even though the call went through. So I am not sure if they will work or if something needs to be changed for them to work.

Thanks for the kernels I hope to find a good one. One thing that helped data speeds was changing build prop value to ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=28
ro.ril.hsupa.category=9
ro.ril.hsxpa=3

I saw your post in the cm7 thread also and had a question for you there. Anyways was wondering if you added in a few of those ro.ril because mine didn't show them all.

Basically I had
ro.ril.hxspa=
ro.ril.gprsclass=10

So I was wondering if you added the others? What nightly are you on? I am on #12 so I was curious if something changed between nightlies or why I would not be showing the others. Thanks

Also what apn settings are you using?

Compared to what
Previous D/L was about 3.7-3.9 at my work, and upload did not change (still right about 1.0 mb up). So far looks like a good upgrade, but have not traveled too far out of my area to really test it out. I also just today put in those build.prop edits and have not seen any change in limited testing this morning... same speeds as without the entries. I am going to re-check my edits on the file....

OK, I re-checked my edits to build.prop, and my earlier copy/paste had inserted a CR/LF at the end of each new line I had added, so I went in and deleted the extra "space" at the end of each line, and rebooted. Now I see d/l speeds of 6.7-6.99 and the same upload speed of about 1.0 mb.... I can live with this.... ;-) -- thanks to all who posted the RIL chnages!! ;)

I answers part of your question on the other thread but the apn settings are in Tbs second post of the cm7 thread in the Q&A section. The idea behind the apn is that with the stock apn you are connecting to the old network designed to handle slower speeds. The new apn will connect you the the new "backend". Thanks for posting all of the meanings. Although the theoretical maximum is 21mbps it would seem the higher class gets us the higher speed... And I would kill for an actual 21mbps but it is physically impossible. wifi is the same way, it is impossible to reached the lab set numbers because of environmental variables... I think all these edits help but there will be a maximum that can only be changed by a change in hardware or conditions (i.e. Location) that's why this modem work is so interesting because it changed how the hardware acts, potentially yielding better results.

Thanks for the reply. I asked about the apns thinking that was what you were using. I had a weird situation that those apn's from the second post of CM7 actually slowed me down and I went back in and had reset default apn's and my speeds got better.

But last night I was testing out the settings you pointed out and kept messing with them until j was getting higher speeds. (My area seems to suck here in Buena park CA for download speeds usually about 2-3, yet with the same default apn's at my work I was getting 8 down consistantly). So after messing with the apn's from the second post in cm7 and the ro.ril's last night at home I was getting in the 4's so it is better for my area. I look forward to see if at work my 8 Downs will increase as well but so t be able to test them out until next week sometime since I am on medical leave due to appendix surgery. Again thanks for your input.

This is great. I've been looking for more modem choices for att gs2.

One of the biggest improvements I saw on my captivate was the jl2 modem which was significantly better than stock in speed, battery and reception.

So far I will stick with stock for gs2 but ill keep trying the new modems. Keep this thread going!

Well, I am having a hell of a time with my phone speed. . .

I'm using . .

1st APN:
Name:HSPA+
APN: phone
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN Type:default,supl

save that.

2nd APN:
Name:Broadbrand
APN:broadbrand
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN Type:dun

save it.

3rd APN:
Name:ATT
APN:wap.cingular
Username:[email protected]
MMSC:http://mmsc.cingular.com
Mms Port:80
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN Type:mms

And I don't get anything above 300 kb/s. This is using the stock modem. I made the changes to the Build-prop and still nothing.

I tested my speed with stock APN settings, and stock Modem and I was getting 1 - 2 Mbit/s download.

With the new modem, I am getting 300kbps download still. I tried the Build-Prop settings and nothing changed. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I can't figure this out and I feel sad. LOL

On a side note, I had to add multiple lines to my "Build.prop" file since they were missing.

(Side Note : My upload speed is faster then my download speed?!?!?)

tht certaintly is odd. both that its that low and that down is lower than up. are you in an urban area? and what time are you running these tests? both have to o with how much taffic is on the tower your connected to.

also RockRatt sorry to hear about the appendix, ive had a few friends have that happen and its scary, on the plus side now you dont have to worry about it. :) and heck maybe your data speeds will increase haha.

So, flashed the modem, don't really see any differance. Still getting something retarded like 300 kbps at work right now. What are we supposed to set the apn at for this modem? Because cm7 defaults to something that stock does not.

Were you getting that low while on stock rom? That is WAY TOO LOW. If you were getting that in stock and also now then I would first suggest going into the apn's settings, hit the menu button, then RESET TO DEFAULT. Reboot and see if your speeds get better. If they do not then I would call att and let them know that your getting SUCH LOW speeds and to MAKE SURE your account is set up for the 4g account settings. If you still have issues let us know and maybe we can think about something else to try. Dang that is low speeds.

Are modems compatible with the Infuse, compatible with the GS2? There are a host of modems over in their forums, one of which is KJ4.

Not sure. I will check some of them out and test later tonight if I can.

EDIT: I tried out every Infuse modem and none would work. They have different sizes for the modem.bin file, bit I am not sure if/how that would have an effect. I then tried out every i9000 modems, i9100 modems, i897 modems also. Some I was able to get a good data signal and speed but one I made a test call it would disconnect.
