tht certaintly is odd. both that its that low and that down is lower than up. are you in an urban area? and what time are you running these tests? both have to o with how much taffic is on the tower your connected to.

also RockRatt sorry to hear about the appendix, ive had a few friends have that happen and its scary, on the plus side now you dont have to worry about it. :) and heck maybe your data speeds will increase haha.
I actually swapped back to the stock radio, and did some data speeds tests outside of my work area after I got off, and I got a consistent 3Mbit/sec download and about 1.4Mbit/sec upload. I think the tower at my work must be high on traffic. I'm going to try and change up the Build-Prop and test that out as well.

Lucky me, I have horrible speeds at work and horrible reception at home. Talk about not winning anywhere! I wanted to get that cell tower from ATT, but I figure they should give me one, not me have to BUY one for $200!!!

RockRatt . . . good luck on the surgery man! I'm sure you'll be fine. Drink an O'Doules for us after ;)

I tried the new modem FW on the nightly 12 build of CM7.1. It did not work. I had gray signal bars the whole time. Currently flashing back to original. I wiped Dalvik before flashing both modems. I did change the build.prop under /system (saved the old one first) and I'm not sure if that made a difference. I am seeing "H" in the status bar more now than before.

I can say that it worked for me. Be sure that you have the "Enable Data" turned on as it (for some odd reason) was turned off when I flashed to the new nightly yesterday. After turning that on it worked without any issues.

I believe this can be found under "Settings --> Wireless and Network Settings --> Mobile Networks --> Data Enabled"

Don't know why this happened, but switching this back on fixed that problem. The fact that you had bars still shows the modem worked (since it was getting reception) but the data was/may have been turned off.

Weird, I just re-flashed the new modem FW and it seems to have stuck. I'll try some data tests later.

Sorry I think that was MY FAULT. While testing out many other modems last night I think I updated the wrong ones to the links. I have corrected them both and updated the OP.

I had to flash back to the old modem. I was experiencing really bad "grip of death" when I was in landscape mode. Also pages were loading slow over my WiFi. I don't experience slow page loading on the old modem FW.

I absolutely agree that AT&T should be giving out microcells to those of us with higher dollar accounts in areas where the coverage is poorer than advertised. That said, I got a refurb one from a local COR store for 50 bucks. Much easier to justify than the 200 price new. The sales guy said they had a bunch of refurb ones in stock.

One other thing you might try adding to the build.prop is ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=1 I'm not sure on how it works but if you have trouble with data dropping out or being off when you unlock your phone this seemed to help. And I agree with the micro cells but sometimes its the building type your in, my school is made of lead or something I spend hours in no signal killing my battery and making me mad

Update: OK, so my new flash procedure for nightly's is like this:

- download new nightly ZIP (when there are enough changes that I want to update)
- reboot into recovery
- wipe cache and dalvik
- flash ROM
- reboot and verify the modem I want wasn't updated/changed by the flash (normally it isn't unless there is a major ROM release/change)
- copy my custom build.prop file w/ new RIL values into /system
- change my font back to the one I prefer
- reboot

I updated to nightly #17 last night and followed the steps above. Today I tested the data xfer with speakeasy. I got 7.9 down/0.7 up with Atlanta server, and 8.4 down/1.08 up with Chicago server. I am not missing LTE with these speeds, though I don't stream movies etc. for that to make a difference. If I drive 9 miles north from the office to home, my data speeds down drop to under 4 Mbps and never improve, even at low congestion times like 2:00AM. Towers and what area you are in make a huge difference in speed. This is with KJ4 modem.

I'm testing the xxkg5 modem from i9100. I already used uckh7 snd uckj4. I have xxkh3 xxki4 nekf2 to still test out.

Xxkg5 data speeds are nice but gotta see how battery is.

Let me know how the i9100 modems work for voice calls. I tried MANY of them and got good speeds but no sound when making a call.

Pretty much the exact same I do after each nightly. I also use zip themed and add my custom theme back on. I also copy a colored version of the cm7 boot animation into system/media. Then once it is rebooted I am golden.
As far as the modems go I see the same kind of thing. When I am at home kj4 gives me speeds of about 4-5 while kh7 gives me a pretty steady 2.5.
At work I was getting about 8 on kh7 but I haven't been back to work for a few weeks so I can see if kj4 will give me better, same, or worse results than kh7.

Ever since I tried flashing a new modem, my wifi/modem connection seems to go gray quite a bit. I moved to the J modem, then back to UCKH7 modem and I'm still getting these gray bars. I changed my build.prop, but saved the original, so I might try that. I have to reboot the phone to get the gray bars to turn green. Anyone else seeing this?

Have you done any changes to your apn settings? I have seen that after making some changes to my apn settings.

I tried to make changes, but I don't know how. I downloaded the APN Manager app but never figured it out. How can I check that I didn't mess something up? Currently, the ATT APN is:

APN: wap.cingular
proxy: (blank)
port: (blank)
user name: [email protected]
password: (blank)
server: (blank)
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMC Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN Type: default,supl,mms

Is that OK?

That is exactly what I have in my APN. Should be fine.

Reverting my apn back to stock (go to the apn manager in ROM settings> menu> revert to stock) fixed ASL my greasy bar woes... Doesn't get around the grey bars in low coverage but that's a hardware problem
