So it appears that Amazon and Moto have come to an arrangement, and you can get a Moto G 4th Gen Prime Exclusive version for $149.99 (16GB RAM) or $179.99 (32GB RAM) with Amazon lockscreen offers and ads. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EZC9WC0

Offers and ads, including personalized deals and recommendations, display on the phone's lockscreen

Prime members get unlimited access to Prime movies and TV shows, Prime Music, photo storage, deals, and more with a pre-installed selection of Amazon apps, including Amazon Underground where over 2,000 premium apps, games, and in-app items are 100% FREE
So my immediate thought is... Can I unlock it and flash a custom ROM (when they become widely available)?

What if Amazon makes the phone's recovery locked?
I'm sure it'll be the same as their new Fire Tablet. When it first came out I was able to at least boot into the custom recovery through fastboot but with their revised version you have to jump through a lot more hoops but it's still possible to root and flash a custom rom.

That's the great thing about the people in these forums, they usually find a way.

If it has an unlockable bootloader like the Moto-direct models, you should be able to flash a stock firmware with no ads. Guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks.

Usually for Motorola devices, you do not need an unlocked bootloader to flash the stock firmware. So I wonder if it's possible to just flash stock firmware from the non-ads version. Amazon must have thought of this though.

To be devil's advocate Amazon manufactured the Kindle Fire tablets, for this version of the G4 I'm not sure if Motorola/Lenovo would let Amazon place many restrictions on it. We'll see in two weeks.

Whatever ends up happening, I'm just glad I finally got to afford a new phone lol. I only paid in total after amazon discounts $11.05 for the 32gb version. I'm happy haha. I had $156 and some change in gift cards I been saving. I do surveys, and bing and what not. It would be nice to get rid of the ads, but small price to pay...literally. :)

It's a real tempting offer, but with my luck Motorola locked it down for them. I'm leaning toward one without the Amazon crap just to be on the safe side but I'll probably wait until some enterprising soul buys one and checks it out.

It wasn't for one day. I just ordered the 32 gb phone and it had the $25 off because I had a prime membership.

I received mine about an hour ago. The lockscreen ads aren't that bad. With all of the Amazon apps disabled, the ads don't actually click into anything.

Pardon the crap quality of the YouTube upload:

Thanks for the video! Unfortunately for some, it looks like the Amazon model will be getting its updates from Amazon, instead of from Moto directly. (Settings > About Phone > "Software Variant: amz" and "Software Channel: amz").

Have you tried seeing if you can unlock your bootloader? (No need to unlock it if you don't want to, just want to know if Moto will send you the code to unlock it)
