Motorola Atrix Baseband Issue?: Modem Did Not Power Up: Need Help!

I have a Motorola Atrix MB860 which is having some problems.

The first of which is when you turn the device on, it sticks on the Red M logo and displays this message on the top

"Modem did not power up (0) Starting RSD protocol support"

It stays like that until I remove the battery.

I can get the phone to boot if I select "Boot Android (No BP)" when holding Volume down when I power the device.

Once the phone is on with android running, it can last anywhere from 30 seconds to 45 minutes before it turns itself off; never getting any cellular network signal.
Like a constant "Airplane Mode".

Looking at the device information I can pull off the following:

System Version: Version.4.2.23.MB860.T-Mobile.en.GB
Model Number: MB860
Firmware Version: 2.2.2
Baseband Version: Unknown (?)
Motorola WT Version: OSHWT_U1_6.54.0
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.9 [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat May 14 13:08:46 CST 2011
Build Number: OLYEM_U4_2.2.3

The baseband really does say "uknown" and I wonder if this is the cause of the phone not starting correctly, and turning itself off.

If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it. (bought 2nd hand so warranty is out).

Thanks for the reply.

Have been wondering that, as I have tried to flash it with the same s/w & f/w versions and also a new radio with no luck.

It would simply stop at the "M" logo after rebooting, as it was before.

Might hand it to the engineer at work (phone repairs) and see what he makes of it.

At least we tried the software first.

I too had this, turned out to be hardware. Before it started, my wifi started turning off, not turning on, and rebooting the phone when trying to turn it on.

Sad and thankful

All this time searching and this post has exactly my same issues... Flashed all ROMs out there and did everything...
I'm in Venezuela so I hope they can repair it cheap (compared to US) I don't want to replace my baby for another model. :)

Don't worry, try this:

Find the Qualcomm baseband ic, reheat it with flux. This solution solved my problem (just the same like yours).
detailed description coming soon from a hunagrian friend :) good luck!

i guess that is the "Yellowed" one ?!

do someone know if it will be good also for WIFI not working at all ?
Congrats on doing what the other guy didn't know how to do, that pic from the site you got it from is easily accessible.

You are close with your guess. Right manufacturer, wrong chip. Check Step 10 from the site you got that pic from and you'll see the actual Qualcomm modem chip.

The wifi chip you are asking about is also identified in Step 10 from that site as a Broadcom BCM4329 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and FM Tuner

thanks for the corrections,
the picture of the PCB was the wrong side of the PCB.
this is the right side, and the RED chip is thw Qualcomm one, and the green one is of the WIFI.
