I've got everything up and running. However, seems OTA updating is not working (still) even despite the common restoring stock boot.img file, pushing OTA update to inactive partition, then installing Magisk to that inactive partition (only rebooting after all those things are done).

Has anyone tried updating Pixel Experience to the new 413.1 that's out currently?

Hey guys. I've been wanting to get this phone rooted since I got it a few months ago, however I'm unable to unlock the bootloader. I've tried repeatedly to use the motorolla unlock tool and always get "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking."

Is it possible I'm doing something incorrectly, or is it impossible for me for some reason? I got the phone from Tracfone.

It seems that Motorola won't bootload unlock phones through this carrier. But maybe I'm mistaken.

I'm having trouble flashing the stock firmware on my MTO Tonga from the list of commands above, specifically starting from the "fastboot flash super super.img_sparsechunk.0" command. It says "permission denied". I downloaded the firmware from lolinet.

Is it because it isn't rooted yet? Anyone know where I can find root instructions? Is it just using Magisk with the stock firmware? Once I am done with that will I have root? Then the permission denied message won't show up anymore when I try to fastboot super?

No. That's not how fastboot works. Fastboot doesn't care whether your Android system has root or not, it is more low-level than that. Permission denied is usually caused by a locked bootloader, but if it's unlocked, I'm not sure what the issue could be.

Thanks for the post and info OP. I just finally rooted my Moto G power 2022 from Metro PCS after waiting 180 days to unlock bootloader. I'm tempted to try this pixel GSI but I've had some subpar experiences with GSIs in the past on other phones. But I noticed you said pretty much everything works . This phone has a ton of potential.

EDIT: So I ended up installing the Pixel GSI and you were right, everything does indeed work ! I was quite surprised because using GSI's in the past on other phones was usually a dodgy experience.

I am trying to install the Pixel GSI on my Tonga (Metro) and am having trouble flashing the stock firmware. I have a few questions, if you don't mind.

Ultimately, I'd want to deGoogle this phone and go with either Lineage OS or Calyx OS (if it is supported for Tonga). Graphene would be nice, but it seems to be only available for Pixel phones.

IF you're already on stock firmware, there's no need to flash it again. Just follow the instructions posted by OP.

If you're on MetroPCS, you'll have to go to the "Unlock" app on your phone, or go to settings and find the "Unlock" menu. You have to wait 180 days from the day you purchased your own to fully unlock it, on top of unlocking it with the Motorola unlock code.

Once that's all done, you should make sure USB Debugging is on and once you connect your phone make sure you "Allow" it once it pops up on your screen.

Right now there is know custom recovery for Tonga. I was also trying to port the TWRP but I'm unable to find the stock recovery.img for Tonga.

Thanks for the info. I probably couldn't write the files due to the 180 days. Where did you find that info if you don't mind? Or is that common knowledge among people flash ROMs?

My OEM unlock slider in developer options is grayed out and it says unlocked. So does the factboot screen (flashing_unlocked). Is there a way to tell if the 180 days have passed and that it is fully unlocked?

Moto G Power 2022 Picked up this phone free. Rootable with 90hz display R/w with magisk root Dolby viper all work On MetrobyT-mobile but was able to flash "Retus" firmware no issues..link...

So far so good I'm wondering what other gsi would work. Only issue I'm having really is data switches to 3g randomly and back to lte. Not sure why but I'm wondering if the TMO firmware would be more suitable over RETUS

I'm running TMobile firmware on my metro Tonga, I've found probably 10ish gsis that work pretty big free, but I haven't found one that doesn't always jump back to 3g automatically. Especially after reboots

Sometimes I'm able to get VOLTE then it disappears for no apparent reason. I can get back on v o l t e by just switching it off and switching it back on but usually that doesn't work again unless I clean flash a gsi

Thanks for the response, saves me some time messing with firmwares and stuff. Hopefully we can find a way to fix this because apart from that issue I'm enjoying gsi experience. Any other gsi you would recommend that works ?
