I ran into a bunch of issues trying to root my moto e4 xt1766 because there does not seem to be alot of info on the rooting of this model of phone.
1 research how to unlock the bootloader this part is documented and not hard through the motorola website.
2 you will need custom TWRP installed. i tried a million of them and finally got one to work and this was one of the hardest parts. once you download it you will need to research how to "sideload" with your abd and install the twrp that way, it may give you an error but even though mine gave me an error it still loaded.
i used twrp-perry-3.1.1-r3.img version. i think i got it here:
3 after you reboot into your phone then either fastboot to bootloader or do a recovery boot. look up how its easy.
boot into your twrp and install the latest version of no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip it easy to find.
4 you will need to dowload a stock boot image to your phone. this is the one i used. i did notice the download came with an already patched boot and recovery image although i was going try them i did not and i may just save you a few steps.
5 then download the latest magisk apk and install. you will want to choose to install it to the stock boot image you downloaded to your phone.
6 fast boot to bootloader or boot into recovery to your twrp and choose to install the "patched_boot.img" you made with the magisk.
that is what worked for me... spent days on it so i hope this helps anyone else.
