Cumulative investment since purchasing new (refurbished) in 2011. I've added accessories over time as I could fund. You have to remember this was one of the first Android tablets so it was relatively expensive at the time.

I am very much aware of the age of the device. I still cannot fathom a reason why it cannot still function as a basic tablet even 6 years later. Still listed on Google's supported device list (at least it was last night 3-19-17).
It's not like it has a sub gig processor and 512MB of RAM. Even a decade later you can boot up an old Pentium PC running XP and it can function to write a document, check email and play music.
With all due respect (and off topic) why not try the 4.4.4 KitKat custom rom?

While the Xoom may be listed on "Google's supported device list" it device hasn't been updated officially in years, it's last official update (US) being Jelly Bean (or was it ICS?). I don't even believe you can find the stock factory images any longer since Motorola was sold. That's hardly what I would consider supported.

I think that that list really shows, is that the last updated version of Android to arrive on the Xoom hasn't officially had its support pulled, that doesn't really mean the device itself is supported.

We've all been conditioned to expect our devices (tablets phones etc.) to be good for about two years before they are "technologically" obsolete. There might not be anything wrong with them per se, i.e. they still function quite well but won't run the latest and greatest so to speak. WHAT A WASTE! While I am certainly no tree hugger, what are we supposed to do, send them to the landfill to be buried or send them overseas to be dismantled by the poor who suffer health issues from exposure to the toxins from the electronics components? It's so hypocritical of the tech companies to claim they are environmentally friendly yet this tech cycle goes on behind the scenes. Even without thinking about the environmental perspective, from an engineering perspective it's stupid because if something is designed well enough to last at least 5 years than there is no excuse for it to be rendered useless by a software upgrade if it can still do core processes and applications. Yes prevent it from running software applications that it does not have the capacity to process. But DON'T kill it outright.

Tried a KitKat rom a couple years ago and it had some reliability issues so I reverted back to stock. I recently tried to root it and put on a custom ROM and unfortunately most of the instruction threads out there have broken links and therefor missing file downloads.

The majority of the thread posts about the Xoom are over 3 years old now at this point unfortunately. So the files you need are harder to track down.

I am using the cm11 4.4.4 kitkat by Schischu and it works quite well for my needs. I just checked and the files are still present.

Spent a little time with my Xoom the other day and installed the beta versions of "Google App" and "Google Play Services". Updated both and am happy to report that I've not had a single crash since. The device is running smooth. Love this tablet. Hope this helps you all out. I know I was thinking it had come to the end of the road.

I'm also running my Xoom bone stock and have applied both of these APK's and all Google apps have now been updated and are running perfectly -

I think just like you. Now almost as reliable and compact tablets as our Xoom are not manufactured. I installed, erased all the possible rooms, trying to fix the damn po-pup of the GAAPS, without our tablet complaining. It now doubles as a watch with Beta GAAPS.
Long live our XOOM!

Guys, no need to flash any ROM or jump through any hoops.
Just install new Google Play Services APK, and xoom will be back no operational condition.
(I don't have privilege for adding link here, so search google for Google Play Services APK 10.5.42)
Good luck

I totally agree with you. I try to buy phones/tablets with decent custom ROM support (Nexus and Snapdragon devices such as Moto G line), sometimes used or refurbs.

Hi everybody. Wanted to offer some guidance on how to stop the endless cycle of "{ insert google app here} has stopped" errors that have arisen from the latest google play servies update.

Here is what I did to regain ALMOST all functionality. While this shouldnt erase all your data, if there is anything you care about, be sure to back it up first. You'll need to be rooted, and have a custom recovery.

Step 1: Download the GAPPS package from the xda 4.4.4 OMNI thread relavent to your model.

Step 2: Go into settings, into wifi, and "forget" all nearby networks, so that the tablet cannot connect to the internet on reboot.

Step 3: Boot into custom recovery. [If you don't have one, I am not going to outline how to install one here.]

Step 4: Clear cache and Dalvik. Install the Gapps package you just downloaded. Clear cache and Dalvik again, just to be sure.

Step 5: Reboot. Wait for process to finish. You should now have a bunch of older gapps that at least work together. But we can't stop here or things will update, and other things won't work.

Step 6: Without connecting to the internet, go into google play store and disable auto updating apps. Then connect to the internet and install the xposed framework.

Step 7: Install two things. One, the xposed module "this app will run without google play servives" ( Google the portion in quotes... I'm not allowed to post links yet ) to stop non google apps from saying "this app requires updating google play services". And then install the "disable services" app from the play store. Open the disable services app, go to system app tab, then to google play, then disable "checkWIFIthenUpdate"

Step 8: You should now be able to use the basic gapps, but cannot install newer ones. This is because they will check for the latest play services on their own, haven't found a way around it. Otherwise you can install and update other apps, and although there has been some minor glitches, it seems to have stopped throwing the "{app} has stopped" errors.

Hope this helps someone.

Cheers.
Please tell me which xposed installer works, or link me? I'm running Omni 4.4.4 wingray.
