My experience with the infamous Shield Tablet... Also a question for other owners.

Mine seems to have "caught" both problems.

The screen flicker only happens under certain conditions; perhaps ambient lighting conditions. Next time I see it doing it, I will try turning off auto brightness. It is not doing it as I type this, even if I scroll around, switch apps, etc., but I am under dim, natural morning light.

The constant waking while charging is far more iterating.

Factory reset seems to be a drastic way to fix it, especially if it just comes back. I do not have any need for a tablet I have to factory reset every week.

I tried to do a logcat in a terminal while it was doing it, but of course the logcat isn't running while the tablet is sleeping, so it did not tell me much. Just periodic "onResume called", but no indication of the cause.

I did see something that led me to think it was looking for the shield controller or some other input device. I do have the shield controller, but I have connected to BT input devices (keyboard and mouse), and those devices were not around when it was waking. BT was off.

I'll post if I find out anything.

there's an option to turn off the screen while charging in the developer options.

That's not what we are talking about. It's not that the screen is /staying awake/ while chargeing, but it is constantly re-awaking (from being off) during sleep.

Mine was doing it approximately one a minute during charging.

Interestingly, mine has stopped doing it. I had tried several reboots, various settings, etc.

Then, one morning, my Shield Tablet crashed -- Spontaneous reboot the first time I woke it after taking it off charge. It is the first and only time I have had a spontaneous reboot (my Nexus 7 Flo did it almost daily, sometimes twice a day with general use).

Since then I have not seen it wake during charging.

So what's it's latest affliction? It's disease duo jour?

It is now failing to rotate the screen. I am using it for work note-taking, so this is a lot of wake - sleep - wake cycles. After a few of these, rotate will just stop working -- freezing it in what ever orientation it was. The lock screen will not rotate, and it will not rotate after un-locking.

It works fine, but it is stuck in what ever screen orientation is in.

It takes a reboot to fix it.

If the pattern continues, I assume this problem will spontaneously abate in the next day or so, and my Shield Tablet will develop a new one -- perhaps spontaneous occasional levitation, or something like that.

Have you tried flashing one of the otas? There is a thread with the links to download them from nvidia's server. That and or a factory reset ?

As of right now, my Shield Tablet is working fine. It has only done the screen rotation lock issue once this morning. Things would have to be worse that they are right now for me to do a factory reset.

I also realize that the simplest explanation for these "errors" that seem to cure themselves is operator error.

I only reported the wake while charging issue because some else posted about the same problem.

I am still 100% percent happy with my Shield Tablet, and the thought of going back to my Nexus 7 2013 has not even begun to have the faintest inkling of the merest start of even beginning to cross my mind.

The M8? :p It sounded like more of an issue. I had a 2012 N7 myself, then this came out and I gave the N7 to my brother.

I bought one on launch day to replace my aging GNex10. I was verry happy with it until I read about the crack issue. Lo and behold when I checked mine, it had a crack. Also the power and volume buttons were a pain to use with little to no feedback. My wifi was okay using the Asus RTN66R 5ghz.It would fluctuate but nothing showstopping. Well today, I decided to get a replacement from Gamestop. I dont know if it was a first bad batch, different factory or what but this one is a definite improvement. The power/volume buttons are spot on, wifi is more consistent only dropping to 150mbps were it would sometimes bottom at 24mbps. No cracks out the box and I have run quite a few benches to get it hot. Seems to bench higher under Davlik as I havent changed to ART yet like I did with the last one.Time will tell as the last one had a crack in less than a week of usage. Is there any way to tell batch, plant , etc?? So far so good! :good:

+1 I got my second tablet from GameStop on Friday and I am completely happy. My first one (from nvidia store) had a bad screen driver causing the screen to not display correctly. For the record I have never had an issue with WiFi or Grid streaming on either device. I have a crappy century link router too. Works fine. Just hope cracks don't develop.

If you are rooted you can turn off PRISM. (Rooting is not hard on this tablet and you loose nothing)

Install a terminal emulator.
Then run:

$ su
# echo "0" > /sys/devices/virtual/tegra_dc_ext/tegra_dc_ctrl/subsystem/tegra_dc_0/device/smartdimmer/enable

My problem with screen rotation is related to the browser.

I mostly use the default (AOSP-like) browser, not Chrome.

When it won't rotate, I just swipe away the browser (in the normal task selector), and it immediately rotates as it should.

Could be related to 'Open Pages in Overview ' or 'Auto-fit Pages'.

At any rate, it is a much easier work around than rebooting.

On some of the T4 devices, the flickering wasn't actually from the Prism feature but from a dynamic backlighting feature called "smart dimming" that was changeable only (afaik) on rooted devices by changing an /etc file.

The screen flicker at low ambient light levels and low screen brightness was pretty bad.

You might want to get a look at /etc/power.xxx.rc (don't know the device string for the ST) - on the HP and Asus T4 based devices, the file was /etc/power.fig.rc)

As shipped, smart dimmer was enabled at all power settings even if the "tegra prism dynamic backlight" feature was disabled in the Settings panel.

If there's a screen resolution in that file that matches the NST resolution, edit that line; if there isn't, change the values in the last line of the file from "1 1 1" to "0 0 1," which applies to any unmatched resolution:

/sys/class/graphics/fb0/device/smartdimmer/enable 1 1 1

to

/sys/class/graphics/fb0/device/smartdimmer/enable 0 0 1
