The head set idea won't work unless you hardwired it. All I had was a 90deg elbow with nothing on the other end and it still detected a head set
As for the tab dieing. I use Tasker to shut off all radios when not charging. In that state it will last 2weeks lol.

Interesting... There's a "with mic" option in there too that could maybe be played with but it sounds like it lasts long enough already. Probably not worth messing with! :)

Looks like I was editing while you were replying. ^

Looks that way LOL. Well in any case, I fount a nice direct wire in 3 amp charged I ordered. I am crossing my fingers that that one doesn't cause the noise

I know about ground loop issolators but they also kill some wanted sound. I will use one if all else fails.

I am using tasker and it works great! All I really need is for it to pause and start the play music app since all the other apps are net based and if the car is off and im not in it, my phone wouldn't be around to tether. So that all is working well

I have 86'd the power button since I am using a "reboot" widget. I was going to keep the tablet bone stock for reliability sake but I couldn't help but pair it to a PS3 controller via Bluetooth. I figure it could come in handy on long trips.

Now as for the USB cable hack, please elaborate. I know nothing about USB devices and was afraid to just "tap" into the 5 volt and ground without understanding possible issues that could arise (I don't want to Fry something) I originally wanted USB access along with charging, so that I could mount flash drives, plug in USB host devices (like the PS3 controller), and so on. I wish I had held out for the 32 gig model since this is my long haul rig. I use it to tow cars to car shows in Oregon, Arazona, and Southern CA. I'm sure I can find a pin out of a USB connector but is there anything else I should know about this hack. Is there another wire that I need to hack to make the tablet go into "AC" charging mode?

I can't say for certain but I can tell you what I do know.

There are 4 pins to a USB connection: +5VDC, Data+, Data- and GND. +5VDC and GND do the charging and the communication is handled with Data+ and Data-. As I'm typing this I'm not sure it's possible though... When you plug in a USB stick or other USB device the tablet has to give it +5 volts to power it and the data+/- does the talking. When you supply power via that connector it must recognize it and switch over to charging the battery instead of drawing from it.

So.... without some significant work I don't think it's possible to charge it at the same time you are communicating with a non-powered USB device like a PS3 controller.

That's what I have found also. When in usb host more it can't charge. I guess there are ways around this but I don't know what they are. I'm prob better off waiting till someone figures out how to ac charge off the pogos

Zac, great job on the project, do you mind sharing your tasker profiles for turning off the radios and audio when the car is not running and then returning everything after ignition? That is all I am missing from it being a perfect experience, as things are now I have to pause and play when getting in and out of the car otherwise the DAC has problems reconnecting.

There is a kernel made by a Dev named Timur over on rootz wiki that allows for charging while in host mode. It also allows for the use of USB audio via a DAC which will give you much better audio quality considering the built in DAC is sub par at best. This would also allow for a volume knob but would eliminate the option to use a flash drive for storage. Go to rootzwiki and search for Nexus 7: The Ultimate Car Stereo

Zac, you inspired me to do the same to my Xterra! I even had to move my HVAC controls, too. :) I won't clutter things up here so the link is below.

Interesting stuff monk... I didn't go through that much trouble though with the DAC and such. I find I get great sound quality (and I'm very picky) out of the headphone jack. That signal goes through two stereo potentiometers for volume and bass and then to an Alpine 4 channel amp.

I suppose if I had to do it again and had more money to spend on it, all digital (especially optical like that guy talks about) would be nice. I had to use the ground loop isolators that came with the amp since even running directly from the battery causes some alternator whine.

I'm just glad to see lots of people doing this!

I'd second that, I cannot figure out how to do this, so sharing the tasker profile would be nice :)

TIA.
