My Samsung Captivate won't update. Getting "unregistered device"

I just bought a new Captivate on eBay and it has the same code. The phone was unlocked, but was supposed to be otherwise in new, factory fresh condition. It looks new, no scratches or dings or anything.

What does this slightly different product code mean? The phone is not rooted and as far as I know it is the stock Froyo (UCJJ4) build. Does this altered product code from being unlocked? If I go through the procedure in the other thread mentioned (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880223) to fix that code, will that relock my phone, or will it stay unlocked? I'm using it on T-Mobile, so I need it to stay unlocked.

I'm just looking to upgrade to get the benefits of Gingerbread and (hopefully) get my GPS to work. Once it's out of warranty I'll think about trying custom ROMs.
It's if your IMEI is different than the one of the box or in the back of your phone (under the battery).

What exactly are you trying to do?

It matches.

Sorry, looking back I guess I wasn't too clear on that. I would like to upgrade to Gingerbread, but Kies Mini won't do it. It just tells me the device is unregistered even though I have registered it through Samsung. For now I want to stick with the stock ROM because it's a new phone and I don't want to void my warranty just yet. After reading through this thread and elsewhere it seems my problem is the same as the person whose post I quoted first, that the product code is a little different from what it should be and therefore Kies Mini can't recognize it or something.

I know how to fix it from the other thread linked here, but before starting that I want to know for sure that I won't screw up something else by doing so. I suspect that the altered product code has something to do with the fact that my phone is unlocked and I want to be sure that the process of changing it back and flashing a stock ROM won't re-lock it. Maybe that's a dumb question, but although I have some experience with ROMs and rooting and such, I've never unlocked a phone and haven't delved into that yet and know virtually nothing more than the basics about it.

Once unlocked, always unlocked. but if you wanna be ultra careful, remove your SIM before flashing anything.
