try adding line 5 in you .bak so you can have read/write permissions
3. cd C:\AndroidSDK\tools (or were ever you SDK files are)
4. adb remount

The filesystem is mounted read only. You need to mount it read/write.
5. adb shell mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system

that extra line didnt work either
is there a step before this i might have missed? i did not flash a ROM and didnt think i had to (cause i really dont want to at this time), so i hope thats not it.

here are my steps:
1 - rooted with ubuntu
2 - back in windows ... download sdk and usb drivers (these drivers did not work)
3 - installed/uninstalled htc sync to get the drivers.
4 - plugged in via usb, charge only, usb drivers worked
5 - opened up cmd and used those lines of code to run .bat file
6 - fail!

Try booting into Recovery. To do this, turn off the phone, then hold down the Volume Down button and hit Power. After about 30 seconds use the Volume Down button to select Recovery. Once Recovery boots it should say Clockwork Mod Recovery 2.5.0.1

Plug your phone into the computer using USB. On the phone use the Volume Down button and navigate to Partitions. Then hit the Power button or Trackpad to hit enter. Then you want the mount /system option using trackpad again.

Then try your .bat and see what happens.

figured it out. there is no toggle/checkmark in the apps settings, but i just installed my 1st 3rd party app.

so i ran cmd prompt as administrator (not sure if that helped)
but what really did it was clicking on the mount /data in recovery too. it was unmounted.

Ah yeah, duh. Need to mount the actual dir that you're trying to get to. Sorry about that. Congrats on getting it working!
yeah, i would guess so. why isnt that in any steps/suggestions that i read??? is it(and some other things) just something people take for granted thinking that everyone would know to do...and how to go about doing it?

anyway thanks for helping me get there...after 3 days of reading and trying things i finally got one of the things i wanted to do.

now onto get rid of at&t bloatware!!

have some 3rd party game app and swype now.

I've been getting the "operation not permitted" error as well. I read somewhere that you need to open CMD in administrator mode if you are running Windows 7 (as I am). Although I haven't figured out how to do that.

I'm not quite sure how to open cmd with it running as administrator though there is probably some command to do it. However if you have something set up as a .bat you can right click on it and choose "Run as Administrator".
