Hi, I have in plan to do my first Android flashing, I have a Green lens Defy with stock Froyo Italian ROM, on phone info I have:
Android version: 2.2.2
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-ga28fcc4
Build number: JOREM_U3_3.4.2_177-3

I have to do also this "12- Install zip from sdcard>>KERNEL"?
What kernel file I have to use? Because there isn't any link under Green Lens Defy..

If I flash with CM9 then I can reflash it with RSDLite and Italian default SBF?

Thank you very much
just try with your stock froyo kernel first ... :)
just wipe data, cache, & dalvik from custom recovery, and then install the CM9 zip.
I have been using my stock froyo kernel from the beginning, and it hasn't shown any problem yet.

First of all, I'd like to thank you for the excellent post. It worked like a charm. It's looking great, but I have 2 problems:
1. sometimes I select an application and it crashes ( not so important)
2. Camera and some other apps don't recognize my SD card (external storage). What shall I do?

thanks

1- crashing apps: reinstall the apps and try.
2- sd card: format the card and reinsert.

Hey! Thank you so much for the detailed steps. My Defy is now running on Android 4 and now I'm unable to pick any calls from my mobile. If someone tries calling me, they get a busy tone after a single ring and even I don't get any notification of call in the mobile. Can somebody help me to fix the problem?

Motorola Defy TELUS Canada SBF

Hello,

I installed the ROM successfully. (First time thanks btw! :)) This may seem like a dumb question, but how do I instal my Telus SBF?

-EDIT- In my infinite stupidity and noobishness, I installed the Telus default sbf which undid everything that I had just done. Now my phone is boot looping with the standard froyo on it. Laugh if you must but please help.

-Second EDIT- Got it back on and working on my network! Much obliged!

Display turned off when i call some one

Hey! Thank you so much for the detailed steps. My Defy is now running on Android 4 and now I'm unable to pick any calls from my mobile. If someone tries calling me, they get a busy tone after a single ring and even I don't get any notification of call in the mobile. Can somebody help me to fix the problem?

After installing this ROM, i am facing two problems at the moment

1. Problem related to call.
Before installing this CM9, i was on stock Froyo Rom (UK),
Now After Installing ICS CM9, Everything working fantastic except that when i call someone, then display is turned off everytime (whether i bring mobile near my ear or not). and display is normal after 3-5 seconds after Call is disconnecting from other end. if i call someone, then i cant disconnect it as display is switched off as soon as i press "dial" button

2. Problem related to Video Recording
Flash cant be turned on during video recording

No problem when i receive call.

best thread for Noobs!

Thanks a lot Suttaroom for this thread..Am a complete noob & with the help of your first post managed to move to cm9 after a nightout. yupps got some problem with the stock SEA15 ROM although the fault was mine as while rebooting i used the power-on switch(haha!). Flashed with nordic rom & alls well with the world..

However have one query. I had to use baseband switcher to get the freq right for india after flashing with nordic stock froyo..However am facing a unique problem of mobile data connection going of from time to time especially if the display is off for more than 10 mins.I then need to switch off & then On the data conenction for it to re-connect. Is there anyway to enable the background data connection?

Cheers!

Problem related to call was due to screen protector covering proximity sensor. After removal of screen protector, problem is solved completely.

However problem related to Video Recording (Flash) is still there.

However, its excellent ROM with regular updates from the developer.

Love the ROM, made my defy so much nicer to use.

However the battery seems to deplete quickly with very little use.

Since I've updated I've not used my phone anywhere near as much as I did when it was on stock.
Is there something in this ROM thats making the battery run out so quickly?.

I used the above to get back to stock but got stuck with RED Moto logo.
I found the post below in another thread and this resolved it so thanks to both and hope it helps others.

What we need to do?
We are launching Stock Recovery and wiping cache and data.

Use below mentioned steps:
1. Remove battery from phone and then reinsert;
2. Press and hold Volume Down button along with Power button till you see Android icon with an exclamation mark (!);
3. Once you see android icon and exclamation mark release both buttons and now press volume up and volume down button together;
4. Above steps will launch Android System Recovery window (Stock Recovery);
5. Now “wipe data/factory reset” by pressing volume down key and to select press power key;
6. On the next screen it will prompt you to confirm this option by selecting “yes – delete all use data” select this option with power key again;
6. Also “wipe cache partition” from power key as mentioned above;
7. Now select “reboot system now”;

After above steps it will take around 3-5 minutes for first boot and your phone will now boot in normal state.

If the above steps does not resolves the issue then I would recommend you to use some other SBF depending on your region.

Hope this helps! :)

I went from Stock Blur to CWM 9 in this thread and then back to Stock purely because of the battery life.

    Also all this people who are asking about how to activate HWA or discuss about governors...
    Fot the umpteenth time, HWA is set by default in all latest Nightlies by Epsylon and Quarx. And Epsylon have also already included DroidX governors back in May. His so called BOOSTED is based on boostedASSv2. And boostedASSv2 is SMARTASSv2 with other values, working according to the same principle. Here you compare both.

    So there is no need to ask for other governors or recommend the "old" DroidX ones. Just open bootmenu and choose your favourit one.

    Because of such posts the thread really gets spammed.

    **********************************************************

    Hopefully you have read thru all the material which was pretty exhaustive and might be in a position, confident enough to take a leap of faith or you waiting to die an old man filled with regret and froyo or even worse ecalir.. ugh!!

    Right so off to it-

    As mentioned a few times this is how to get on to the ICS CM9 DEFY Epsylon bandwagon if you already have froyo as stock:)

    **********************************************************
    CHARGE YOUR DEFY TO 100%
    **********************************************************

    Install on PC:

    RSDLITE
    Motorola drivers
    Download your specific SBF file

    kernel-froyo-222-179-4-signed.zip
    gapps-ics-20120429-signed

    **********************************************************

    1-Settings>> Enable USB debugging>> connect USB cable to defy and PC

    2-Open SuperONEclick on your PC and click on root>> Click yes to all (donate if you wish) -- You Have Rooted Your Phone Congrats !!--

    3- Install the app SndInitDefy_2.0.apk and open it>>install Latest Recovery(Do Not Install the option which says for CM)

    4- Green LED should appear on a successful installation.

    5- Switch OFF and ON your phone

    6-While rebooting a Blue Colour LED should appear when the M logo is displayed and on visually seeing this press the volume down to enter CWM/Recovery

    ::UPDATING TO A NEW NIGHTLY::

    PREREQUISITES :

    Current Rom : CM9 DEFY EPSYLON3
    DEFY:MB525

    1-Install zip from sdcard>> CM9 nightly

    2- Wipe Cache partition

    3-Reboot

    **********************************************************
    ********************************************************************************************************************

    IF you reached this you must have messed up somewhere..No worries

    Hopefully you heeded my warning for charging to 100%.If not pray your battery lasts the procedure( it should provided it had atleast 50-60% charge while starting your ordeal)

    Now you might be wondering why I had asked you to install the RSDLite ?!

    If you are getting Bootloops( though it should not happen)then do the following:

    1- Remove and re-insert the battery

    2- Hold down simultaneously both the Power and Volume UP for approx 5-10sec and release

    3- The screen should display
    "Bootloader
    9.10

    Ok To
    Program

    4-Open RSDlite on your PC >> Navigate to the froyo SBF file

    5- Connect the phone and pc via USB cable

    6- The rsd should display phone connected or connected

    7- click on Start .. wait ... wait .. wait ..

    8- it should say PASS >> only then do you remove the USB cable.

    9- Repeat all the steps for installation of ICS all over again.. it should work though..:)

    =============================================================================================
    Note: Some users even after using the above mentioned method of reflashing to stock face Bootloops of the red Moto Logo.- Please check which version u have and only flash the sbf( red/green Lens)
    =============================================================================================

    Note:
    Yet some others have found this a solution to the bootloops while trying to re flash Stock froyo

    Hey guys, well i'm a noob when it comes to this, i had a lot of trouble even rooting my defy+ cuz it was 2.3.5 and when i finally got to root it and installed the 2init, well i thought i was good enough to install a cm9, i found yours and ur guide so easy that i tried it.
    It all was going so good to the point where i choose the .zip to install the cm9 nightly, and i got an error: it can't open the .zip file, says it's bad, tho i've downloaded some other zips it keeps saying the same.

    I'd really appreciate any help on this cuz atm my damn phone is nothing more than a dead weight in my pocket.

    Thanks.

    UPDATE: used another nightly and it appears to be ok so far.

    This works for the defy(mb525) froyo to ics.. the kernel which you have to flsh is differnet, the cm9 is also different.. my friend did you not read the thread heading??
    PM me if you want steps for the defy+ :)

    Fishing for thanks -_-

    There are several threads with lots of info.The target audience is your nOOB who doesnt have to feel frustrated not knowing where to look.
    If you feel the sole purpose of this is was fishing for thanks dont you think there would be a slight lack to commitment to the thread
    But then again to each his own.
    Please look elsewhere.

    Thanks mate for the how to!
    What an amazing screen shot!

    One more noob question talking about backups : I am currently on GGL ROM (Gingerbread for Green Lens Defy), can I do a full backup, install CM9 and then only restore data once on CM9?

    Thanks for the help!

    Sent from my MB525 using xda app-developers app

    please don't do that if i may suggest.

    i have tried it and left stuck at moto logo.
    i was using GGL ROM, so i just install the CM9 from epsylon3 zip, and got stuck.
    ( i was assuming that the GGL ROM is still using froyo kernel, but maybe i was wrong)

    the best way is to flash sbf back to stock froyo first.
