[Edit as of 1-3-12] Install worked fine on my refurb nook until I got to Market, which wouldn't show any apps. But after a couple of days, market apps suddenly appeared, installed one, then did the the vendor.apk reinstall per instructions, all is good. Patience everybody.

For those who can't get Youtube to work, confirm you have the correct date and time settings. I couldn't get Youtube to work on a hacked PPC last year and resetting the date on the device fixed it.

Over the long weekend I have installed and tested about 60 working apps from Market, Amazon store, and sideload. Opera Mini is great with mobile pages. NYT and Slate apps work, and look better than their mobile web pages. Gmail works fine. Pulse, Taptu, Tapatalk, RSS readers and Newsrepublic work. Astro and Titanium both work and do backup. An older version of Kindle app works (tried the current version but it double flashes every page). All the book reader programs work to varying degrees (still trying to choose). Thanks OP, great root package. With some effort NST is now by far the best eink reader for those who want to read, but do more than just read books. I'll keep my Kindle 3g for its send to kindle feature and 3g browsing, but that's about it.

My old question remains, though, is there an easy way to reversably prevent b&n push updates? I ask reversably, since who knows what good stuff rev 1.2 will bring, maybe a stock browser? With my Nook Color I just changed a system file extension and it did the trick. Specifically, on my Nootered Nook Color while in 2.1 I just renamed /etc/security/otacerts.zip and there have been no updates. Any ideas here? Don't want to mess with anything that breaks this great root. Thanks

Like others, Rooted Forever stayed on the screen, but when I removed the card and rebooted I got to root. Thanks OP. Three issues:

3. After doing the Youtube signin and Gmail sync, both worked fine, Market is showing "No Matching Content in Android Market." It has been a day (I saw on some other threads that this sometimes fixed this), no change. I have not changed the vendor.apk since OP's instructions were to install an app first (but no apps show to install).

Thanks

i have this issue also ... i spend 4 days getting it fixed... I used nook touch tools to wipe cache. i cleared app data using nook color tools, i installed the vender.apk... wiped cache.... uninstalled vender.apk there nook color tools settings... wiped cache... cleared app data... restarted atleast 15 times... and then yesterday it just worked... i have no idea if any of what i did fixed anything but it worked. i installed one app then reinstalled the fixed vender.apk.

If nothing else works, try emailing Amazon App Store to yourself, at least you will have access to those apps.

Maybe I'm slow to understand but....

OK, I received today a used Nook WiFi, white back cover (WiFi only) Serial Number 1002xxxxx, Software Version 1.7.0

If I understand correctly this is the black and white (eInk) Nook that came previous to the Color Nook.

There seems to be a lot of variety of names for this device. Nook WiFi. Nook Classic.

Which makes it hard for me to decide if I'm even looking in the right place for rooting instructions.

I want to hack this thing into something resembling an android tablet. Is this even possible?
Will SalsichaNooter work on my device? Will this thing run Android 2.2?

I'm not a complete rooting noob, I've rooted two different Android cellphones, a T-Mobile G1 and a T-Mobile Comet.

I just don't want to brick this new toy by using the wrong tools.

Please advise, thanks.

I am afraid that if you are unable to follow common forum etiquette (no big fonts and different colors) and google some pictures of nook to find out what device you actually have, every HowToRoot tutorial would be complicated. Better do not touch it at all.

Ok, your comment on font size may not be out of place. I'll avoid that in future.

I thought I described my Nook fairly completely (in words) but for the visually oriented, sure, I'll post a picture. IF it's not too challenging for a simpleton like me....

There doesn't seem to be a way to insert a picture inline...sigh.

And the forum software just informed me I can't post a link to Barnes & Noble's image on their website.

Ow wow. I guess I failed again....perhaps one of the more benevolent among you could condescend to coddle this pathetic clueless loser?

Warning to all rooters

The last week I have had multiple cases with permanently bricked Nooks, (yes permanently!)
The reason is people writing the SalsichaNooter directly onto their Nook Simple Touch instead of writing it to an SD card like they're supposed to do.

To all wanting to root their Nook:

- Do _not_ write the image directly onto your Nook, in fact, never ever write anything directly to it!

To salsichad2:

- The reason this is a problem with SalsichaNooter in particular is that the image is bigger than the NST boot partition.
- That means people end up overwriting the extremely important /rom partition as well when doing this mistake.
- Would you please consider reducing the SalsichaNooter image to 155616 sectors? (79675392 bytes)

Yes! A good idea!

If nothing else works, try emailing Amazon App Store to yourself, at least you will have access to those apps.

Yes, threebears, this is something I recommend before rooting a NST/n2e...

Login to Google Accounts and set up associations btw Email, YouTube & Calendar...

...in fact, I have already posted this in the Q-n-A Forum before I was permitted to post here... it explains the procedure I used to get my NST to a more fully functioning reader-pim-web-email unit.

Thanks again to devs and intrepid explorers. I hope my procedure linked above is helpful.

Not sure where to proceed...Should I try to go back to stock and try all over again? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748

Maybe trying following the link above?

Some progress made....I deregistered the nook and changed the email to a gmail type. I didn't notice that it was a yahoo account before. Oddly my root dissappeared after doing that though I was under the impression it was rooted forever. So, I guess I will root again following saischanooter again via sd card. I hope it goes smoother this time around.

Went smoother...I can now recieve email. Youtube worked initially then after reboot showed same behavior of flahing screen the nothing. I guess that means little as far as use. I can use the market but no apps pop up. Im off to see if I can fix that.

Ok...Where I am at now. Gmail works fine, youtube flashes as well as opera now. browser works fine. market is now giving me a server error. This is after I replaced vending.apk.

Im fresh out of ideas for te moment besides setting up a static ip which I dont know how on the nook.

http://nookdevs.com/index.php?title...ket&oldid=3917#Move_the_files_out_of_.2Fmedia

been searching around seems like this is why im getting an error on market not having a valid android id. I tried following the instructions but get caught up running the virtual device.

LOL I was reading in the touchnooter thread about waiting a day and guess what it worked! Working market! Hope someone reads my post and learns from my mistakes. Now what to install? so many options

SalsichaNooter With Gapps for Nook Touch 1.1

I do NOT claim ANY credit for this. The credits all goes to:

    What it does:
    • Enables USB ADB via uRamdisk
    • Installs su and Superuser.apk
    • Installs Busybox
    • Installs Button Savior
    • Installs ADW Launcher themed with Minimalist Black (thanks Kralik)
    • Installs NookTouchTools and Jars (Edit n/reading now/side btns/RecentApps+ActivityPicker+ForceOrient)
    • Installs NookColor Tools (To Enable Non-Market Installs)
    • Installs Gapps (Gmail, Market, Youtube, Others)

    HOW TO:

    • write the SalsichaNooter04.img on the SD
      • Linux: Unzip and use dd if=SalsichaNooterXX.img of=/dev/sdcard
      • Windows: Unzip and use WinImage to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk
    • Insert TouchNooter SDcard into your Nook and Reboot.
    • You should see the screen "Rooted Forever".
    • It will boot like normal and you should be asked to select a launcher now.
    • Remove the SD,
    • Reboot,
    • NookColorTools - disable and re-enable non market apps (uncheck and check it again),
    • Youtube > Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account.
    • Gmail > Sync.
    • Market (install at least 1 application with this version, search doesn't work)
    • now (after you have installed 1 app) eventually replace Vending.apk with this to enable search

DISCLAMER and WARNING: I'm not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, thermonuclear war, or the current economic crisis. Please do some research if you have any concerns about this app.

    But works fine for me....

I put my downloaded copy into dropbox, so here you go. Could I ask that you not overload it? :p

Thats new, for me it seems build.prop wasn't edited correctly.

Is gmail working?? if it isn't also add the second part before the reboot of the first,

Try this manually writing it through adb line by line, if it still dosnt work, come to my thread, and look at what apeine is trying.

    Code:
    cd C:/android-sdk-windows/platform-tools
    adb connect yourNSTip
    adb shell
    su
    mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
    rm -R /data/data/com.android.vending/*
    echo "ro.config.nocheckin=no" >> /system/build.prop
    reboot

If Gmail isnt working add also this :
    Code:
    rm -R /data/data/com.google.android.gm/*
    sed -i '/uid.system/,/perms/{/uid.system/b;/perms/b;d}' /data/system/packages.xml
    reboot

    Great job salsicha.
I already rooted my 1.1.0 nook with the 1.6.24 nooter with 1.1.0 files. But making it less of a hassle for the other is a plus!!!
E parabéns por ser o primeiro brasileiro a fazer um nooter para o Nook STR!
