N6 connects to 5GHz wi-fi even when "2.4GHz only" is set

Under Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi frequency band, I have "2.4 GHz only" selected.

However, on my home network (which broadcasts the same SSID on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz), it still frequently connects at 5GHz.

Has anybody else seen this, and is there any solution?

Also: is there any way (e.g. third party app) to set the phone to "Automatic" except when it's connected to my home wi-fi, when I only want it to connect at 2.4GHz?

(Why do I want to do this? I'm running AirDroid in local mode on my PC, which only connects at 2.4GHz. If my N6 connects at 5GHz, then AirDroid doesn't work as it regards the PC and phone as being on 2 different networks.)

I have wifi extender with 2.5ghz and 5ghz bands. They have slightly different names (ssid's)

When I set to 2.5 only, the name of the 5ghz network disappears from the list of available networks. Does yours do this?

Do you have unique SSID's for the two networks? (I'm not sure if it's required, but that's the way mine is set up)

Do you have a Custom kernel or rom?

I'm using the same SSID for both networks (2.4GHz and 5GHz) - this is convenient for all our other devices, as they can seamlessly connect to either frequency. It just appears as a single name in the list of networks.

I'm running Cataclysm.

The known ssid's with passwords are stored somewhere. Changing the settings to 2.4 GHz doesn't clear this
First choose 'forget' and connect again.

I've the same with Chromecast. Changing the name of the 5 GHz ssid can make 'connect life' easier.

Many thanks.

So that sounds as if I:

1) Set phone to "2.4GHz only"
2) "Forget" my home network
3) Reconnect my home network (at 2.4GHz)
4) Set phone back to "Automatic"

then my home network will always connect at 2.4GHz, but other networks that I encounter will connect at either 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

Is this correct?
