well, after further review, changing the modems did not help.
did a full wipe of everything, flashed 4.2.1, and went through every modem available, and still no sms.
wiped, went back to 4.1.2, and sms works fine.

i have no idea from now on.

is there a big difference between the way 4.2.1 and 4.1.2 handle sms messages?

Not that I'm aware. I haven't really dove into it to see. I believe its device specific how they handle em. I'm at a loss as to how to fix it

Well, thanks for the help. Guess I'll just stay on 4.1.2 for now (will probably get a new phone in march when I return to the US anyway).

Could it be a carrier issue? That Vodafone is not supporting 4.2.1 yet?
Could be but I don't see how a different version would be supported and a later point update like 4.1.2 to 4.2.1 would make it not be supported. Were u ever able to get a 3rd part app to work? Which ones did u try? Might wanna try calling the customer service for vodaphone and see what they have to say bout it.

yeah, i tried both go sms and handcent sms, put the correct smsc in both, and no go. both work fine on 4.1.2.
i also called vodafone here, but you gotta understand customer service here, it's very different than in the US. basically they turned off sms service then back on, had me reboot my phone, check, then re enter the smsc, reboot, check. and after that was not working, they said they had to put in a technical ticket and someone would get back to me. its been almost a week now, so i've given up on them.

to quote ricky bobby, its mind bottling why 4.1.2 works and 4.2.1 does not.

so its been a while and i still havent found a fix for this yet. i called vodafone and they just said it was a software issue.
i thought maybe with all the 4.2.2 releases, maybe a fix was in there somewhere. nope.
i even went so far as to do the factory reset from the settings menu and formatted the sdcard hoping that would eliminate any leftovers from roms past. that didnt help.
but i did free up about 6 gbs of space by getting rid of all the folders and files from 2 years of installing/uninstalling apps, so that was a bit of a bonus.
sorry to mini-necro this thread, but if anyone has any ideas of how i can get my phone to send a sms message on 4.2.2, you would become my new hero.

OK so I'm having an issue that I've been searching for a fix just bout all week with no answers. I can't send any type of SMS message. I can receive them but as soon as I try to send I get an error message saying message not sent and a ! Mark with a red triangle around it. I have spent over an hour on tech support with a.t.t. and they can't fix it. I've factory reset and reflashed the ROM and gapps. Deleted cache from messenging app. Checked, reset, and made new apns. Tried sending with WiFi on off data on and off and still nothing. I'm on tasks aokp 11/20 with everything "stock" to the ROM. Any help I'd appreciate it alpt

Try sending message with a different SIM. If it is sent then probably it was your operator problem like message pack limit reached or sumthin. Lemme know.

you got a rom suggestions?
ive tried these so far (all 4.2.2): Task650 AOKP, AOCP, PACman, SlimBean, Captivating Rom, ported AOKP
Hi man, did you sort out the issue with your sms messages ?? My problem is exactly the same to the last letter. I'm on Jellybam ROM for a few months now...since version 3 or so. In that time, my messages were fine. Since the upgrade to 4.2.x (jellybam 6 or something) I cannot send a text msg. from the ROM native messaging app. I tried all the stuff with smsc number, different radios and so on, but nothing worked...then I tried a third party app called Chomp SMS....and I can send messages again!!! I dont know if GoSMS works or not, I never triedt it, but Chomp SMS definitely works for me...
Hope this will help you...Lukas

Thanks, going in the phone settings with the number sequence
and filling the smsc number for my provider proximus +32-475161616 fixed the issue;
i can send sms again. sending mms still fails but that's another story.
For some reason hte smsc field was empty.

Try the guide on this page
there are 3 ways to enter that smsc number
this is what worked for me on rogers
"+17057969300"

Updating your Phone/Tablet

Open Dialer
Type the following sequence '*#*#4636#*#*'
Open Device Information/Phone Information/Tablet Information
Scroll down to SMSC
Optional: Hit Refresh to see current SMSC number used
Enter in your carrier's gateway number in one of the following formats:
The 12 character gateway number including '+' (ex. +12063130004)
The 12 character gateway number in quotes (ex. "+12063130004")
The 16 character PDU formatted SMSC number as described below (ex. 07912160130300f4)
Press Update

Once entered, it can take up to 10 minutes for the phone to 'handshake' with the new gateway. A reboot is also suggested to power cycle the radio. If the format you entered does not work, attempt one of the other formats. Assuming everything worked, you should now be able to send and receive SMS properly.

I am having similar issues with a T-Mobile branded LG G2 (D801) and an AT&T sim card. I cannot send any sms messages. The really strange thing about it is, that it worked before I traveled to Europe for two weeks at the end of December. Since I got back to the US, no more text messages (I can only receive them). Very frustrating.
I tried updating the SMSC number, but I get an update error when trying to set a PDU number. I can set a regular number but it won't help. When I click "Refresh" the value in the box is "+13123149810",145
Can anyone help?
Thanks
