It's sort of misleading. You don't need root at all -- you just need to install Clockworkmod recovery. When you install a custom ROM, it will have root access built-in so you don't have to actually do anything to get "root".

If you want to install Cyanogenmod (or any custom ROM) with the Gratia, you need to do this:

1) Use this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133446
2) Use Revolutionary (formerly known as AlphaRev X): http://revolutionary.io/
3) If Revolutionary fails to install Clockworkmod for any reason, you need to do this manually with these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14693680 (If Clockworkmod installed successfully, then skip this.)
4) Use Clockworkmod to install the ROM. Make a Nandroid backup (from Clockworkmod) first so that you can revert back if needed.

Some notes:
1) To my knowledge, there is no publicly released RUU for the Gratia. That means you can't revert to a 100% factory setting with the Gratia. It's not really a big deal though because Liberated FR008 is basically the same ROM with bloat removed. And there's a newer custom ROM with Sense (Liberated 2.2.2) available as well. No, you won't receive any official updates, but there won't BE any official updates. The phone is outdated now.
2) If your phone is under warranty, this will void that warranty. You won't be able to exchange the phone if anything goes wrong.

Is the phone on the FASTBOOT screen while you are trying to do this?

And the phone says S-OFF (not S-ON) when you go to the HBOOT screen?
