Rooting a ROM for a friend. Was wondering what is the best ROM-Kernel combo for best battery consumption? New to this phone and I have never rooted a GSM device (his is on tmobile).

While at it, can I skip the CID step if I'm rooting or do I have to have that step to be able to install any roms? Do the roms specify if it is for tmobile? TIA

Give Android Revolution a try. It's awesome. Skip CID, you need the custom ROM to recognize the phone as T-Mobile version, since the custom ROM is based on the European model. Take a look here. Battery wise, I got 24 hours with normal usage and 36 with light usage. Good enough for you? :D

+1

It's a stable ROM that performs well. Since it's for a friend I'll assume you want something stable with ZERO bugs so you can flash once and forget it?

If you guys are more "power users" I say test out CM or MiUi. Or if you become "power users" one day.

It's recommended not to mess with CID. That way, the custom ROM identifies the correct version of the phone and you'll get all T-Mobile's extras: wi-fi calling, visual voice mail, etc.
