so seriously, why not consider the Samsung Galaxy S8?
root is available, has wireless charging, 3000 mAh battery, 3.5mm headphone jack, and is $350 off at Best Buy

Three bits of news.

  • Ordered my first LG V30 yesterday. To qualify for the LG $400 Visa gift card I will need to order the 2nd one (or any eligible LG device -- but I'm buying a 2nd LG V30) within 45 days. (You have to pay for the first by December 2 to even get in the game, then buy a 2nd eligible LG device within 45 days of the first.) To clarify, it's technically pre-order since that "open market" US998 model is not yet released, but it will qualify as a purchase since I paid in advance. B&H Photo (the authorized retailer) says so. I'll have it in hand within two weeks, as the phone will ship on December 5.
  • Both the European H930 (64GB V30) and the H930G (128 V30+) were added to the LG bootloader unlock list today. The "open market" (officially carrier unlocked) US998 will be added sometime after it's released on December 5. Took 3 weeks for the H930 to be added to the list, after it was released in early November. So, probably just after Christmas for the US998 (the phone I ordered)?
  • Oreo started rolling out for the South Korean LG V30 carrier models. Hopefully others will follow soon.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto- /general/2017-phones-to-replace-2014-quark-droid-t3597950

My current top picks are (Verizon bought reliant)
  • HTC u11 (sold by HTC) unlockable most likely (no headset jack, no Qi wireless)
  • Moto z2 force (no headset jack, Qi wireless with extra mod)
  • Pixel 2 (no headset jack, no Qi wireless)
  • (2017)Moto z2 play (1080p, Snapdragon 6XX, Qi wireless with extra mod)
  • Htc10 (sold by amazon) unlockable (no Qi wireless)
  • (2016) Moto z play (1080p, Snapdragon 6XX, Qi wireless with extra mod)

Sadly most of these will have a locked boot loader.
I do not supply my phone, so I have very little options.

I personally would go with the opo 5t (no IP rating, no Qi wireless charging, only 1080p) but it will not work in Verizon. I suspect I could change the imei but that is shady.

None of the ones you list have built in Qi wireless, and most don't have headset jacks. The Moto ones can have Qi wireless with larger battery --
with mods, but that's a ripoff. Motorola gives headset jacks to the lower budget Moto Play (1080p, Snapdragon 6XX) but not the alleged "top tier" Moto Z (1440p, Snapdragon 8XX)? They also give larger battery to the lower budget Moto Play, but shrink the battery for the more expensive Moto Z. Pay more money, get LESS features? I've given up trying to figure out Motorola.

I do like that the HTC has stereo speakers.

Well you have that detail that Moto Maxx users don't have.

Most of they went go to Nexus/Pixel, OnePlus and Xiaomi devices. In Xiaomi case, mainly Mi5s Plus.
Same criticisms as above... I'm not going to downgrade my specs with a new phone. :p

But look at this:

LG V30+™ | Unlocked
US998U Unlocked

http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-US998U-Unlocked-v30-plus

See specs at that link, but
  • Snapdragon 835,
  • bootloader that can be unlocked,
  • 64GB (V30)/128GB (V30+) internal memory,
  • 4GB RAM,
  • dual cameras in back, with rear camera OIS
  • Qi wireless charging,
  • quad DAC, headset jack,
  • almost zero bezel design, 6" 1440p OLED
  • IP68 rating

Not totally perfect -- needs a better front camera, stereo speakers, 2GB more RAM -- but it checks off enough boxes to replace my Quark. I not LOSING anything, not downgrading any features.

V30 (64GB internal storage) unlocked for North America (US998) and Europe (H930) was released, and Europe models (H930 64GB, H930G/Italy, which is a V30+ 128GB model) has already been placed on the LG Bootloader unlock list. There's already TWRP and root. North America model will soon be placed on the list.

LG should release the unlocked V30+ (128GB internal storage) soon. I don't know why LG can't just RELEASE a phone. They stretch things out for MONTHS. I wanted to buy TWO LG V30+ for me and my wife -- but I was forced to buy a V30 I did not want, just to qualify for a $400 gift card before the December 2 deadline. If the unlocked V30 was available by December 1, why is the unlocked V30+ not yet available?

I will buy a V30+ (as long as LG releases it within 45 days of my first purchase, to fulfill the $400 gift card requirements), but I really wanted TWO. There's only $50 difference in the two models, with double the storage. So, I'll give my wife the regular V30.

Anyway, bootloader can be unlocked, works on Verizon if you care.

And there's a T-mobile network menu that seems can be enabled via root, for those obsessing about T-mobile's new LTE band 71...

Thanks for replying in the proper thread.

Sadly, the htc's are probably pipe dreams. I really like HTC and would have bought the u11 over the v30 but to each their own.

I will most likely have to choose from Verizon's website.
I feel the z series is gimmicky but I also feel the z2 beats the pixel. I also am pretty sure I'd get the battery add-on.

I'm not a huge lg fan and to get a high end lg without an unlocked bootloader is not going to be one of my top choices just yet. That and I do not believe it is an option.

I have no idea when my next phone will be supplied, but I suspect it will be soon.

LG for me is same as trash. After the problems with the LG devices and LG of Brazil is such a big motherf**ker ( actually same as other manufacturers). But about the devices, that's is the way some people have went. From what I observed, they look for a phone that in have a great battery, a good battery backup and a powerful hardware. Mi5s Plus, OnePlus 3/3T and OnePlus 5/5T handle this easily. You have your preferences and I don't disagree with you since I have mine too, but that's the truth about Moto Maxx users, same as me. And I think you're the only one quark user that is looking on that way, looking for a device that you won't lose anything of quark.

I would only get the Exynos version. The snapdragon root version has 80% battery charging limitations, right? And latest updates block that root, right?
so I've read that root does reduce the battery by 20% on the US variant, but root is still achievable.

I wound up getting the S8 (smaller version) on black friday ($350 off).

so far, very impressed! only thing I miss from the turbo is the wave-to-wake feature and center clock. there are some mods out there that can come pretty close to what I had before. center clock is possible without root, but I would need to get the subtratum app (only $2). this does have "Always-on-display" (AOD), but i disable that except when charging. the device does have LED notifications, which is fine (that, coupled with my watch is all I really need).

my main reason for root was to customize the display (status bar, power menu reboot, notification controls, etc) and to block ads. given that all of this is possible without root on this device, I do not need to root. now, once they stop updating this device, then I may root (but by then, I could just get a new device if needed).

the cool thing about sammy's is that they have numerous themes. but if you don't like to theme (or the touchwiz format), you can easily install the pixel launcher and google dialer (among other google apps) to give you that look/feel of pure android - albeit with some samsung bloatware. however, given that this has 64 GB of memory and is zippier than the turbo, I'm not too worried about.

it does allow you to force hibernate apps (just like greenify), so I can set those apps in that mode (but still cannot disable them).

also, I am getting better battery life than the turbo.

currently on Nougat 7.0, but I'm sure we'll get Oreo soon enough (beta is floating around).

lone drawback is the bloatware and "samsung experience". I do prefer a pure android experience, but if all is working well and not throwing other notifications at me or dragging on performance, then I don't mind (yet). with the touchwiz launcher, you can hide any app, so that is a nice feature.

this does have Samsung's AI - called bixby - with a dedicated button. fortunately, that button can be re-mapped. the phone does wake from a lockscreen when I say, "hi bixby", and it does work quite well. but if i want to use google assistant, all I have to do is say, "hi bixby, open assistant". then google assistant opens and is ready to listen.

bixby does take some getting use to, and is very comparable to siri - it just needs to learn more about you to give you more customized results. bixby does allow you to change the phone settings with your voice (a feature that google assistant cannot do - at least on this device).

all in all, very happy with my purchase.

so, if you want retain wireless charging, have a nice size battery, great battery life, keep your 3.5mm headphone jack, customize your display/notifications & block ads without root, then I would certainly recommend giving it a try if coming from the turbo.

plus, the price point is great entrance at $350 off.

of course, the pixel is $300 off now, and is very tempting - but only because I would be able to sell the sammy for $475 - thus making $120+ on the transactions. but I think I'll like the sammy better.

if/when the pixel 3 gets wireless charging, then I'll consider trading in the sammy.

hope this helps.

OK, got mine tonight. Picked it up from the UPS store. B&H Photo charged me the $819.99 (the reduced rate). I couldn't remember if the price had changed yet when I ordered. Still need to call them and see if they'll price match Best Buy $799 (even though that's actually a higher price when you factor in tax). ;)

Yes, still has the plastic screen protector on it.

I probably won't really get to mess with it until this weekend. Not set up yet, of course.

And then I need to buy a second one (LG V30+) by January 10.

My impressions? TouchWiz has come a LONG way, where it's actually not an eyesore and is snappy and quick. Substratum support is wonderful, and for having a 6.2" screen it is nearly the same width as my turbo.
Oreo is coming soon for it, I have the Oreo beta flashed on mine, and bloat free unlocked version firmware.
I recommend checking it out
I know most people are skeptical of Samsung's due to TouchWiz, but they have worked hard to fix complaints about it
Also, it has a headphone jack

(Posting here, so it won't be off topic in the ROM thread...)

Thanks so much.. Wow , I just noticed you picked up the v30 via tapatalk sig... probably off topic here but I also went over to your thread on possible replacement phones to check out your post. Congratulations, I will definitely post over there to see how you're liking the device so far as I have been playing with the v20 and getting ready to UL-BL and root that device soon. I'm strongly looking at the v30 as well. :)
Yes, I'll keep my XT1225 as backup phone. And my wife is still currently using her XT1225 daily.

Still waiting for LG to place this "open market" US998 phone on the LG Developer Bootloader Unlock list, like the European H930. Took three weeks for that one, after release. So, probably a few days before Christmas?

Unless they wait until after the "open market" V30+ is released... My wife will then be given this phone and I'll take that one.

I wanted to wait until root was available before buying this phone, but LG is just taking too long to release it.

They released the unlocked European H930 in early November, then waited until December to release the unlocked "open market" North American US998. (Not the U.S. Cellular model, the one eligible for bootloader unlock.)

V30 US998 "open market" has been released early December. V30+ US998 "open market" is available for pre-order.

These are ONLY sold by authorized retailers, NOT by carriers. U.S.Cellular model is the exact same model number, but theirs will not be eligible for bootloader unlock. LG checks the IMEI.

So, don't trust resellers on eBay, because there's no way of verifying. I bought mine straight from B&H Photo, one of the authorized retailers specifically noted on LG website. I have also preordered the V30+ from them.

Yep.. I've gone through B&H before for my v20 and N6P(pretty good purchase experience on both). Glad to see that you got this device and hope you're happy with it. Your choice on this phone pushes me a bit closer to it for sure. Hope I haven't bugged you to much today... look forward to continuing the discussion as you test out the phone... Have a good one! :)

They also retroactively price matched Best Buy $800 price, even though with had it was really more expensive than B&H Photo $820 (no taxes, free shipping). In GA, Best Buy total price would be about $848. Still, they gave me a $20 refund when I asked...

Very nice.

My wife got each of us an S8 Active right after they came out with AT&T. If it was unlockable with more rom freedom it would be a great replacement for the Quark, albeit larger than I prefer. I just heard yesterday about a Vernee Active coming out that seems pretty interesting, but I don't know how well it would work trying to put it on Verizon.
http://www.vernee.cc/ is the page for it if you too haven't before heard of it.

Edit: I am still using my 64gb quark for a business line with verizon as it provides better coverage where I live.

couldn't agree more. my first device was the Samsung Droid Charge - horrible! the S8 is really a great experience (aside from being too tall).

however, I probably will not root until they stop updating the device. despite all of the bloatware, battery life is great. I'm able to block notifications on apps I don't want to see. That, coupled with some great rootless tweaks and adhell, this is an ideal spot for me.

First, thanks for an excellent and informative post! I'm on the verge of replacing my quark but not quite ready to commit. I've been an LG fanboy for a long time (just recently relinquished a Nexus 5 I had 3 years) and considering I'm relatively poor limits my choices. I generally buy older, proven devices, how I ended up with the Droid Turbo (among others I've bought broken and repaired) and though I throughly love the performance, it's time is nigh as a primary device.

So given these few facts what is the general consensus on the LG V20? For an affordable option.

I've had the LG V20 for a few months now and have really enjoyed it. In fact, I plan on rooting the device here maybe later today or tommorrow.. I like this device for many reasons, but here are just a few.

- The display ended up being far better than I expected going to an LCD.
- IR blaster
-Expandable storage
-REMOVABLE BATTERY ;) Yes!
-Camera is great especially if you like shooting in manual mode
-And lastly, the second screen. I, like many people moving to the v20, thought it might be a bit of a gimmick. I can honestly say that I've used it far more than expected and it is one of my favorite features.

I was a bit concerned with a few reviews that claimed the phone got a bit laggy after a few months of use, but I have not noticed that at all. They are getting really reasonable in price considering the phone is only a little over a year old I think. I purchased the open market, factory unlocked version(us996). That's the one I would recommend.
