i just got mine from ATT for $180 with their monthly installments (not next plan, just a payment plan)

10/mo is the existing offer for 30/mo (300)
5/mo with a trade in (150)
+30 for an 'activation fee' (330/180)

heck of a deal if you have an older phone to trade in (or snag one up for 50 off reddit/swappa to save an extra 100 instead of 150)

plus if you factor in inflation, the 5/mo in 2y should be a smidge less than todays dollars (nitpick i know)

Is the bootloader unlockable from AT&T? That makes all the difference to me. Can you even root the phone with the bootloader locked? On Fi it is and it's able to use multiple carriers, Google Fi is an MVNO. US Cellular, Sprint (bleh) and T-Mobile are usable and switchable for me on Fi.

yeah, makes sense, based on the fact that i can delete the 2 att apps pre-installed makes me think they dont really have their talons in the pixel devices just yet

I think if you can see the OEM unlock in the developer options you should be able to. I know that on Verizon devices for example that option was not there or greyed out.

yup, greyed out, wifes pixel 4a direct from google is not. shucks

i suppose a price to pay for a$320 savings

in recent memory, i'm trying to think of the only reasons i need root these days and sdmaid and adaway are the only two items i could come up with. but i haven't used either of those utilities in a long time. so time will tell

the 4a 5g never truly excited me, i really wanted the 7t/8t, but i just couldnt deal with the lack of ATT support any further. so this was my 'damn i really need a new phone' phone from my oneplus 3t

if i get a solid 1.5-2y out of it, i'd be insanely happy for what i paid, even without root i suppose

You can ask them if they have a locked bootloader policy. I know that on some carriers if you have the device for some time they allow you to sim-unlock but not sure about bootloader unlock. Or maybe in time someone will figure it out on here.

it's def sim locked until paid off

bootloader lock != sim lock or at least that is my understanding

i'm sure someone will get the bootloader unlock at some point

The only catch with the Google unlocked 4a 5G is they won't work on the mmWave / ultra wide band that VZW is deploying. Found that one out just recently... but it's not that big of a deal to me, at least not for the time being. I'd rather have the ability to control the software (ROM) that's on my phone, so I'll live without the 5G UWB until further notice.

I got the google fi deal - don't mind trying them out for 60 days to get the 4a 5G for $300 and a $120 cash trade-in on my pixel 3a.

As far as what do I need root for? I use magisk root in order to run:
Advanced Charge Controller - stops the phone from charging when it reaches any level I set - currently 90% - so I can leave it plugged in whenever I'm around a charger and not overheat/overcharge the battery.
Vanced Manager - so that I can enjoy vanced youtube and vanced youtube music without ads.
Energized Protection with the "ultimate" package - to block just about all ads, especially in the swipe-left-from-home google now feed.
Call recording with skyvalex call recorder - but note that due to restrictions in android, only calls using the cellular phone network can be recorded, not wi-fi or VoIP calls. This is the only one here that is not free - although there is a free trial.
MagiskHide Props Config - to get google pay and my bank's app to work on a phone rooted with magisk.

i had a horrific time trying to port over numbers to and from google fi. Their support is outsourced to India and tier2 is impossible to get to. I finally went back to VZW prepay as their network was better, cheaper and you can actually get real support. YMMV though.
