There are many other tricks in this thread that users have successfully used to get their device to boot to the CWM SD. I suggest you try more things.

And booting to a CWM or TWRP SD is the only current way to root or install a different ROM to your device. You used to be able to root via ADB but B&N closed that loophole a long time ago.

so my buddy asked me if i could get 8.1 on his nook. long story short he already had cyanoboot installed on emmc.
i tried to install a new twrp img but went into a bootloop. i tried your advice on booting from SD. it isnt working. i cannot get it to boot at all. when i use ADB it says the tablet is in recovery.
i cant get SD to boot at all. at least 50 attempts at both burned img and the new way.
i tried to push a new recovery.
i have tried to get to fastboot but this device doesnt seem to have this.
although adb says the device is in recovery i am stuck on a cyanoboot screen from the emmc.
any ideas?
