For those having trouble booting this has worked every single time for me.

1) Load up the stock rom so you can register it, if you haven't done so already
2) Factory reset the device
3) After it resets and loads to the screen asking you to enter a language put in your sd card
4) Continue to enter information as you normally do
5) Afterwards it should download a software update and reset itself then the CWM screen will load.
Make sure you let the tablet update and reset itself or you'll have to start over.

This has worked for me every time I've gone from stock to cm.
Thank GOD!! This worked!! OP should update the 1st post with these instructions so that newbs don't ready through 10 pages of "just be patient" and needlessly reboot their NookHD+ 4,342 times.

Thanks kodochax.

mine will boot into SD card....but only if I insert card when off...keep card pressed in and don't release. Then power up and when NOOK screen appears release card to result in click.
Thank you, and like many others on this forum; I'd like to confirm that this method worked for me too, after trying vigorously to boot via SD card naturally.

It seems this occurs only on the newer Nooks, but I'm sure we've already proved this fact countless times already, haha. ;)

I've had to flash a huge batch of these tablets. I did have a number of them (maybe 5% to 10%) that would not boot to SD on the first try. Of that batch, most booted to the SD card on the 2nd or third try. I would remove and reinsert the card between tries. There were a few stubborn ones that would not work at all, but after setting them aside for a couple of hours, they would work. I'm thinking that there's some sequence that gets it "stuck" where it won't boot from the card and after a certain timeout, it will work again.

Your mileage might vary - I tried the pull in at last minute method, the press the n button, etc. the only thing that worked for me was waiting 10 minutes between reboots. Now I have CM and CWM so hopefully will not have to go through this again...

Just in case it helps anyone....

I was unable to get kodochax's method to work. My Nook would never try to download a software update - I tried factory reset about 5 times, and I never got that option. I had recently updated my Nook to the latest OTA update, to 2.1.1 I think - not sure if that's why it never tried to do a post-reset update.

Anyway, after a couple of days of trying, here's what just worked for me - I held down the power button while the nook was turned on, with the SD Card in, in order to do a 'hard' reset. Previously, I'd done a soft reset by only holding the power button for a couple of seconds and choosing "OK" to shut down the system.

After I did the hard reset, the system booted directly into Cyanoboot, for the first time.

Hopefully this will help someone else!

hello,

i do not know if this can help but it is what works with my nook: With the tablet turned off, press "n" button, keep pressing it and then press the "on" button for three seconds or until you see the nook booting. It is the consistent as solution in my case.
you are a legend, worked first time with this!

Still not working :(

Hi All, I have a Nook HD+ with 2.1.1 stock installed. I'm trying the XDA 'for dummies' guide to install Cyanogenmod 10.1 but simply cannot get it to boot from sd. I've tried all the tips so far, including resetting to factory default, but the device does not update.
Is is a case of there are some Nooks that will just not boot from sd card or is there some other way I can try to install CM 10.1?
I saw there is an 'installer' app but it's not accessable on the Play store, and my nook is blocking me from installing unknown apps. Also, I can't find a setting in the nook to allow installation of unknown apps. Please help!!

There is no way of doing anything to stock (replace ROM, root stock, or set unknown sources , etc.) without a working bootable SD. And a few devices can be very stubborn to boot a bootable SD. But all should boot eventually. Some users have given up and found an excuse to exchange for another unit from B&N.

That installer app (zip) is just an old way of setting the SD to accept a CM zip. It still needs a working bootable SD.

finally got it to work by going from a class 10 to a class 4. i bought it on black friday so its a newer device. thanks to everyone that suggested alternate methods.
That was exactly my problem as well! I tried everything in this forum, but changing to a class 4 card worked on the first try.

Thanks!

Tried literally every method listed multiple times. Bought a 8GB Sandisk MicroSD card Class 4, followed the instructions from "Installing CyanogenMod 10.1 for Dummies", and booted into cyano first try. If you're using a class 10 and it refuses to boot from sd go to Radioshack and pick one up on sale for $9

My HD+ booted right away. My wife's, purchased the same day, refused many many times. I turned the HD+ off, took out the SD card, turned it on and up it came(no surprise). Turned if off again, stuffed in the SD card, and voila, it booted. Superstion? Perhaps, but I'll never have to boot again and I'm not going try reproducing this procedure. Take it as a merely anecdotal account of a petty triumph.

For what it's worth I bought a nook hd+ and Integral 32Gb class 10 micro SD. I flashed on the 4gb image file. This was recognised from the nook OS but was ignored during boot. I tried circa 20 times with no joy. I then left the nook fully off for >10 minutes and gave it one last try... which worked, ie. booted from SD and allowed me to flash on 10.1.3. :D

has anyone had any updated advice on this subject?
I had recieved an HD 7" for christmas and got it to load 10.1 hummingbird. It was a little finecky when trying to install apps from the SD card. But worked.

I have upgraded to the HD+ and cannot get the unit to boot from SD. I've formatted the cards, formatted and partitioned, flashed the 4gb image, tried loading the boot files, tried the small edition of cw recovery and have put about 8 hours into this thing with no luck. Im not going to jump ship or nothing, but really enjoyed 10.1.

Please help!

Thank you in advance.

Have you read the whole thread and tried all of the different tricks people have tried?

Unfortumately yes I have. I'll go back thru and try them all again.

I am using a pny 16 gb c10 card. which I've read has about a 50/50 chence of working.
Definitely try a different card. I had success with PNY but a card change is definitely in order.
