Yeah, tried that first, but failed as well (most likely my own ****up, I admit) and I just couldn't bear with the jb bugs anymore, besides, root for me was fun but with the apps I'm running not a 100% necessary.
Also, it pissed me off just the right amount to finally get working on rooting/flashing a new rom to my desire Z, been waiting with it for so long since it was a hella lot more work than rooting the tf300.
So with the knowledge I got from playing with my tab, I felt confident enough to start on my desire z, took me a couple hours (mostly just re reading stuff to make sure I did it right but I even started to understand what I was doing It's running cyanogen7 now, absolutely WAY better than stock htc garbage.

Who knows, when I got some spare time again I might start looking into the whole tablet issue again.
