I know es file explorer wont work for root. You need a root file explorer. Also, it would be a good idea to download a rom ( either streakdroid or custom 2.2.2), put it on the internal storage, and try booting into cwr to flash it. You boot cwr by powering the streak off first. Hold volume up in and push / hold power. You will get a recovery boot menu. From there choose update from zip ( this is where cwr is) and cwr should boot. From there follow guides to wipe data / cache / delvik and then go to install a file from zip. Choose the rom zip ...sit back...and relax as it flashes to a fully rooted rom :)

Hope that helps!!
I will give this a try. Do you have a suggestion on a good, possibly free file explorer that will work to rename and move the files I need for the wpa mods that I am trying to do? I am hesitant to do a full rom change as I am afraid I will brick my DS7? I have never done this and don't want to cause more problems than solutions. My need for now is to get the mywi to tether for Internet and gps access while on the go. The fancy stuff I will work on slowly. Thanks for your replies, I just hope you don't tire of answering my newb questions. :)

Hi again :)

Its no trouble at all. Sadly im unaware of any free explorers to read / write root. Ill do some looking for you though. As far as bricking the streak goes, its near impossible to break it completely. If anything, test to see if cwr will load for you. Im assuming you downloaded Rom manager via market and installed the latest clockwork recovery for the streak 7. If so, test by rebooting into recovery and apply update via zip. If it works you will see a black screen with orange menus. We can easily guide you along from there once you get that far. There are definite advantages performance wise to using a custom rom. Im using the custom 2.2.2 because I need bluetooth more than overclocking capabilities for now. I did try streakdroid and oh boy was freakin fast. Over 3k in quadrant scores ( more than DOUBLE the score from a stock rom!!!!) Also, custom roms remove all of the factory junk.... makes a huge difference in free space / speed immediately.

Edit : try this file explorer. Does it ask for root permissions on your streak? If so you should be good to go!!

Tested it.... you have to go into its settings and enable root. It appears to work :)

No. Go into its settings. There is an option to enable root. After u click it, superuser will pop up asking root permissions. Click Allow. If you are properly rooted, you can now copy and paste the wpa file! :)

it said it was granted permission to root, is that good?
Yup. Try to copy the wpa_supplicant file into /system/bin. Rename the original to wpa_supplicant.old just to back it up first. If you can rename it then your root took.

ES File Explorer works great as a root explorer. You have to go into the settings and do two things: change the root folder for file exploring (change it to /) and enable mounting the system as read/writable. I believe both are under "root options."

ES File Explorer is one of the best, free apps you can get. Happy exploring.

Head over to the Android development thread for the streak 7. There are only 3 roms really to choose from. The one I use is called "custom 2.2.2" . Id absolutely use streakdroid 1.3 but I need my bluetooth keyboard. If you don't use bluetooth go that route. You can push the streak to a stable 1.4 ghz. It will fly. Otherwise, if you want a stock rom but clean go for the one I'm using. It has no overclock but everything works without a hitch. No oem junk and has a nice black icon notification bar. You will need to use a different launcher though. Easy to do. Just install from market :)

PERSONALLY I use vtl launcher from xda ;) tons of features. Pick one and ill walk you through setting it up :)

Ok I think I will have to with the custom 2.2.2, I also need Bluetooth for connectivity. I will try and download everything I need later today when I get home from work. I also need to figure out a way to hook up to a computer, maybe my wife will let me use her laptop as I have had no luck connecting to my pc running vista. Are there any known fixes? I can't run the abd, I think that's what it's called, files because I am on a 32 bit system and it requires a 64 bit to load the required system resources. Unless I am over complicating thing as is usually the case.

If possibly can you tell me more about the "launcher" that is needed and why it is I need one? I remember launchers from years ago but since I've been an iPhone user all that is null.

The beauty of clockwork recovery is that you can dowload the rom to internal storage and boot cwr from recovery . No desktop needed :)

Also,
A launcher is just the homescreen user interface. You just download and install from market.

I have a question about downloading to the internal memory. When I downloaded the gingerbreak, it put it in the "sd card" folder. I had removed my sd card to be sure it went into the internal memory, what did I do wrong? Is there a way to change the default download destination folder?

The whole CWR thing has me confused. I tried the power/vol up and I don't think I get what you are saying as far as screen info. I don't have my streak here, i left it charging, to test out. I will have access to it later so maybe I can test it out.
