I'm not sure that this model has an SD card slot. The case looks like it may be made more like some of the cheaper tablets. It seems to have much more rounded edges and a less-industrial look. The larger bezel probably means that the unit is larger.

Can't get excited about a down grade. Sounds as if Moto is trying to clear the warehouse before releasing the "real" upgrade.

Motorola is like some heartless pimp making his older "workers" walk the streets when they're way past their prime. Amazing they are warming over this model.
But I read that this "Family Edition" has an IPS screen, if true that is an improvement?

"$40 worth of applications" made me smile.

Wonder if it's really an IPS screen?

Otherwise just the current Xoom with less memory and some cheap kid-friendly software.

I wonder if the IPS can be fitted on our Xoom's.

If so, you going to buy one for $379 to get the screen? :)

So nothing really new for the xoom other than a screen.

Not impressed. I would however go get it if the charging connector was anywhere other than the bottom of the device....

Speaking for myself because I wondered the same thing he did. An IPS screen for a xoom means that there is now a manufacturer making these in the aspect ratio and size that would fit. The only things to worry about with this now is that I don't know whether it connects the same way or requires any driver (which I'm sure if it did could be pulled from the family xoom by our glorious devs). It would mainly be an issue of connection.

Parts generally find their way to ebay from asia so if the price is right it could well be worth it.

Uh no. I'm talking about buying a replacement screen in the future and installing it.

Personally I plan on picking this up, I think for the price its a great buy. What are the chances that the current 3.2 images would work on this? I can't see it being any different spec wise

Discussion at Xoom forums. Looks like it's updated with IPS screen but bluetooth is dumbed down, and not sure if GPS is included. Also, more plastic, less durability. If true, they made this version less likely to stand up to little kids tossing it about? If they kept the original build and just added the IPS, reduced memory 32GB ->16GB, and retained other features it would be a good deal for the price. If the current roms don't work, being stuck with the kid friendly crap wouldn't be a good thing...

According to Moto's sight, it is made of anodized aluminum and soft touch. So similar materials to the original Xoom. From the pictures provided it looks like the back is aluminum with soft touch around all edges for better grip. I must admit that I am a little miffed that the $380 Xoom gets a nice IPS display but the $800 Xoom got a lower quality VA display.

On a side note the colors and contrast on my Xoom seems better ( though not IPS better) with higher contrast and richer colors since it returned from its upgrade. I know its the same AUO MVA screen since the viewing angles are the same ( and from dmesg) so maybe some software tweeks in the latest version of Honeycomb.

Do you have the original Xoom? If so, how does the screen quality look compared to the original. Does it look look like the screen is the same size (as in it'll be the exact fit) as the original?
