A bit unrelated, but trying to figure out why my $80 Amazon tablet has L1 support but my 'flagship' OnePlus 5 doesn't... Or at least not yet...

Sent from my OnePlus 5 using XDA Labs

I love in India so I'll send mine for the update next week as they'll be covering courier cost.
I hope there will be some way in near future where it can be implemented in custom roms.
Hey mate did you send it yet? Can this update be done at any service center in India? Cos there's a centre close to where I live and hoping I can just go there and get it done quickly

Their update with "autenticated PC" must be flashing some partitions we dont use when we flash custom roms. Someone wanting to send his phone to Oneplus to get the update should try that :
Flashing stock OOS, latest version, without rooting, full stock, bootloader unlocked
fastboot boot twrp
checking md5sum of ALL partitions, saving them to a text file on the PC
put a placeholder file in /sdcard to see if Oneplus will wipe your device during their process
as soon as it cames back, boot twrp and check md5sum for ALL partitions again. Compare the md5 to see what partitions did changed on the phone

Thats purely theoric, but it should be possible to find some stuff starting here

+1, i have a OnePlus for that, friendly root, Pure Android (OOS or Custom) ;):highfive:

Netflix is on my computer or tv, not my Smartphone
I have Netflix on my OnePlus 5 and they say 480p but it looks that same as my 1080p YouTube vids which is crystal clear like any other 1080p content. No way do I see a reason to update it for that when I can't even tell the difference and I have 20/20 vision so it's not bad eyes. I mean I can see 480p ****ty vids on YouTube but my Netflix looks the same as my 1080p YouTube Vids

I'm rooted (Magisk) so had to side load Netflix (gets blacklisted from playstore) and just did the eye test with YouTube 1080p video and Netflix Altered Carbon. I agree with you there is no way the Netflix playback is 480p, so I'm unsure what the issue is to justifying sending your phone in for either the hassle or risk. It's not that I doubt their making some change but that it matters to most people.

I'd like to read input from someone that had the upgrade and their impressions of the before and after effect to justify the hassle.

Huh, that's odd, I'm rooted with Magisk as well and with hide turned on I can install Netflix through playstore.

Yeah it passes the eye test with me. I'm not handing over my phone for no perceivable difference. I think anyone that's had the "update" done will probably not tell the difference.

Not so odd as when I first installed Netflix is when I got my phone back in July and was rooted with SuperSu. After that I restored Netflix via Titanium Backup when wiping to upgrade from Nougat to Oreo and had to also switch to Magisk. So you comments on Magisk and Netflix a perfectly valid.

I just got my device back after the L1 upgrade. And I can definitely see the difference especially in Amazon prime videos. I also see the difference on the Netflix app too.
Whether it's worth it or not is up to the individual to decide. I think it's worth it, plus I can probably price my phone a little higher when I sell it.
And I'm now root again and unecrypted and still have L1.

How did you check the quality? If you see HD (0.46 GB/h) in Amazon Prime settings, it's still SD quality. Only Netflix HD seems to work with the L1 patch from Oneplus. Amazon has a device whitelist for select phones on which true HD playback works (officially).

It seems that OnePlus stored the wv.keys (part of what allows L1) in the bootloader.

You are correct. I only have SD on Amazon. But Netflix works in HD so that's a plus.
I was fooled by Amazon. Lol.
But for Netflix, I checked the resolution.

I think you might be right because I did notice a different warning message after unlocking my bootloader than before j sent it in.
