very interesting, but as a Nx7 owner....
I'm wondering how you solve the on/off button probem, this is rear, unreachable.
I've tried some wake up sofware and it works pretty bad.
(turn off software make the job)
Well this is my way around it and only time will tell how practical this is (Seems to work so far).

I use an application called Tasker. My Android tablet is connected to a usb car charger which only comes on when the ignition of the car is turned on.

So, If the tablet is running from a USB power source, then turn on screen, tell it to stay on, launch the Car dock app and make sure sifi/bluetooth is enabled.

If the power is cut to the tablet, Put it into airplane mode, set the display to timeout in 7 seconds etc. This makes the tablet use very little power and should allow it to stay in a stanby state for several days without a problem.

This will all depend on how often the car is left and driven throughout a week but so far my tablet has not dropped below 90% power.

The other option is to pull the tablet apart and hard wire the power button but I don't want to do that if I can help it!!!

Matt.

Matt,
Way to make me think...I used to use Tasker, but then I started playing with NFC & my GNex.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Only if I could usb otg and charge at the same time. I was planning on using the nexus 7 but 16gb wont hold my music. Hopefully a 32gb or higher comes out one day. Or that pogo dock and then i would be in heaven. As of now, just using a samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0.

Has anybody extended/externalized the Nexus 7 power button? If so, which contacts did you use? I don't really want to mess with the ribbon or it's header. It looks way too small for me to solder on to.

This is not a Nexus 7, but a Samsung tab plus, I’m considering getting a nexus 7 as I think it may be a bit smoother.

Heres a video of the final result: (sorry for the poor quality video, my real camera went bad, haven’t got a new one yet)

Not sure how to have the vid in the post. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDNiw6AVzmI

Specs:
Tab Plus (1)
Tasker
Google Music
Torque
Torque widgets
Scantool.net OBDlink MX - can always leave it plugged in with the power save modes.
Behind the scene 120v power inverter so i can use “AC” power charging all the time.

Tablet is setup with taskrr so it turns on BT,WIFI, adjusts screen depending on time of day and displays the custom start up and loading screens while it turns on/off wireless stuff sets screen to always on, etc

When the truck turns off, turns off BT,wifi, turns off ‘screen always on’, displays turn off screen, some other stuff.

I get audio to the truck via BT. doing so all the steering wheel and dash controls work flawlessly. (play/pause, next, previous, etc) only wish android BT supported the audio info protocol (like pandora bt)

Heres some pics of the build:

Vacum formed a mold over the tablet to slide in & out, although it primarily stays in the dash.

Initial cutting of the dash panel.

That's cool... I cant b without my nexus when I'm out of the car so that's y I just made the mount I did. Although my next one will have to wait till I get the note 2 cuz it too will have a place to call home on drives  it will b epic! But for now this will suffice. On a side note I know u can't tell on the video I posted but the sound clarity is superb. Still have left right front and back so the direction of music is apparent. I still need to upgrade my door speakers and tweak some stuff. Then I'm gonna get either a single 12/15" mofo in a custom box and beat the crap out of it.

I wanted to ask ... where did u get the vac work done? That would have taken loads of time off mine.

Ahhhh.. Tasker seems to be the app I've been looking for. I always knew there had to be an app to do some of these things. I have a question, will it be able to kill apps as well if it loses power to the charger. I often have poweramp running and playing music when I turn off my car and I would prefer it to either pause the music or kill the app when I turn off my car.

Here is a link to my install.

Yes it can kill apps. You can also simulate media button presses to pause and play the current song with change instate. Nice install BTW!

I found that feature for simulated media presses. It works better than I could of imagined. I'll probably be holding out for the 32gb Nexus 7 before I replace the Nook. I appreciate the kind words about my install.

I wonder if there is a way to do a backup camera. Maybe a wireless IP camera or something that would trigger an event in Tasker to bring up a live feed... Hmmmm....

can you share how you have it set up to change the screen (brightness i'm guessing) by the time of day?
