It look like I have found a way to make your Nexus 7 in landscape mode on the Home Screen. All you have to do is install the IMDb app
HTML:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.imdb.mobile&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5pbWRiLm1vYmlsZSJd
Play the Paranormal Activity 4 trailer (Possibly any trailer) and then hit the home button and you will be in landscape mode on your Home Screen! But when you turn it off it will go back to Portrait.

I don't know why people are asking about screen rotation on home screen. This tablet was designed to use in portrait mode mostly and this is how it would be best utilitized. Anyways, this is personal choice but try to use to the tablet in portrait mode and you would soon start to appreciate what Google was trying to do here with the interface.

Any one else find it kinda awkward to hold in landscape? I got my nexus 4 days ago and I find my self holding it in portrait more often... Idk I even did the whole "tablet mode" thing.

or, if you have root, you can just add this one line to the bottom of your build.prop file and reboot..

launcher.force_enable_rotation=true
make a local.prop file instead in the data folder, works without root

For 7 inch the interface selected by Google is way better than tablet interface. Tablet interface is good for 10 inch tabs. I have used the tablet ui in glazed ROM but I turned it off immediately. Anyways its up to every person to decided what is best for him

does rotating the home screen to landscape give added functionality? I have the trial version Ultimate Rotation, but I don't see a huge advantage of a landscape home screen. i see all the info on forcing landscape, so it makes me think my experience will greatly improve with a landscape home screen. is this purely a matter of personal preference or am I missing out on something by keeping it portrait?

Could you please expand on that? What data folder? /data is ro and /storage/sdcard0/Android/data doesn't seem to be picked up (wasn't expecting it to be, either). And AFAIK I can't remount rw without having root? Thanks.

Yes the N7 is easier/better used in portrait mode. But I just like it when I come out of an app that's used in landscape mode it doesn't force me to rotate the device immediately but I can stay in that mode.

Bingo! Its about choice and "fluidity".

Being locked into portrait mode like this (on the Home screen, settings, etc.) makes for a really disjointed user experience.

Screen rotation shouldn't be something people not only have to think about but then physically have to keep juggling!

Agree with both comments above..

Also try downloading a movie and then watching it. It will only play in portrait mode. however if you could rotate the screen the film would be full screen, No brainer really..

As a work around download "Mx Player" ( mentioned in another thread). and it Rotates the screen.. :D

Its all about choice and messing with the Apple fan boys, lol..

Being locked into portrait mode is rediculously annoying when flipping in and out of apps that run in landscape mode (games and movies for example).

Before I bought the N7, I figured I would be fine with portrait mode only. But after just a few hours of using it, I was searching all over XDA and decided on getting Nova launcher.

Now if only the lock screen would rotate too... Its annoying to have the tablet propped up on a stand in landscape orientation, and have to wake it up with pin (or even worse, with face unlock lol) in portrait mode.

This thread got my thinking so I downloaded ultimate rotation control and its works great. Also rotates lock screen landscape if you want. Free 7 day trial so worth a look.
