Congratulations. Actually, you should be able to have this work also, without separately powering the USB hub. In other words, the hub (and all attached slave devices) should be powered just fine, via the USB host port alone. Did you try this?

When I hook up a USB cable from the Sherpa 50 battery pack to the host cable and am not powering the USB Hub I am only able to mount the SD Card reader, the HDD just clicks and won't mount.

I changed my setup and just cut the end off the 12 volt adapter that fits the USB Hub power in port and wired it to a USB cable end. When I plug that USB cable into the Sherpa 50 and then into the hub all the slave devices work. I plug another USB cable into one of the USB Hub ports which feeds the OTG Y host cable with power. Not sure why I can't get it to work with just the host cable hooked up to power. Maybe the Hub I have is just crappy? Any ideas? It would be ideal to drop the additional cables if I can.

New Setup:

This look more manageable already. I'm pretty sure your hub is causing the issue with the other option (power via host port). Just try another $3 hub and it will probably just work.

Yeah, not too bad with how it's currently setup. I also tried it with my smaller Guide 10 Battery Pack which is charged off a Nomad 7 solar panel and it works as well. Could be a great solution for photographers or videographers out in the field that need to transfer files from their sd card to a hard drive.

Any recommendations out there on cheap unpowered hubs that people have got to work powering more than one slave device just using just using the OTG Y Host Cable?

I am using Metallice's kernel with trickster mod but I have not seen any fast charge options. I am not sure that the Nexus 7 is compatible - just the Gnex and others

Fast charge has nothing to do with otg+charging.
And ofcourse the n7 doesn't support this...

Press thanks if I helped ~ Nexus7/CyanogenMod/M-Kernel

Picked up another cheap USB hub from eBay. Still can't mount both slave devices unless I add power to the hub.

This is awesome. Running the latest OTG rom right now on an n7 about to be installed in a truck for the infotainment system.

I'd like to be set-up with a large external hard drive for media storage, I have noticed that whenever DC power is cut from the input of the n7 (ignition turned off) the USB host disconnects and changes modes and loses the hard drive mount status momentarily. This causes an unexpected device eject and delay in media being populated in the gallery/media libraries in android after each re-wake.

Anyone have any input on how to fix this issue? I know USB has capabilities to sleep on other devices like the Asus transformer models, external drives will shut on/off with devices sleep-state without unmounting from the systems volumes each state change.

No matter what settings are set in USB host menu, it seems to have similar behavior of dropping USB host connections every time DC state changes.

Just making sure, you're using the "fixed" kernel, not the mobile one?

Anyone having issues pairing a Bluetooth device? Can't get my Microsoft notebook 5000 mouse to connect, it just keeps popping up a pairing request asking for a pin. Edit, got it working after a couple more tries.

Have a look here, I am doing a Car install at the moment and needed to make a Dock and had all the usual issues, with power and such, I am using a 7 port usb hub that has switches on each port, this is really handy.
Here is the link to the hub, it does not come with a power adapter, but you can buy your own one

Using an OTG adaptor hooked up to a powered usb hub and 2 devices (keyboard, wireless mouse dongle) burned through ~50% of the battery charge in about 4-hours, even with none of the devices in use and screen blacked out (wifi on, but no major updates pulled in), except for about 30-minutes of intermittent mouse & kb usage. Without the OTG + hub + devices it might use ~5%. Would bluetooth use less?

Having a minor issue. Rooted my N7 and it works with a cheap OTG cable I got from Fry's Electronics and this controller:
http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Nintendo-Controller-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B0034ZOAO0

I also have the official N7 dock. I place the N7 in the dock and plug the OTG adapter into the N7 then the controller into the adapter.

Once I do this, the N7 stops charging even though it's in the dock.

Is there any way to fix this?

Perhaps a search for otg + charging and finding out this is the expected as designed behavior before posting a question would have been helpful. You'd then have even found cabling and alternative kernel solutions to the issue.

Try this kernel http://mehrvarz.github.io/nexus-7-kernel-download-page/ it works for me. Here's the op http://rootzwiki.com/topic/37755-timurs-kernel-usb-rom-usb-host-power-management-usb-audio/
